Effects of outdoor artificial light at night on human health and behavior: A literature review.

Environmental Pollution, 2023
The quality of life of human beings has improved tremendously through improved productivity, convenience, safety, and livability due to nighttime lights that illuminate outdoor work, leisure, and mobility.

Myopia and ambient lighting at night

Nature, 1999
Myopia, or short-sightedness, occurs when the image of distant objects, focused by the cornea and lens, falls in front of the retina. It commonly arises from excessive postnatal eye growth, particularly in the vitreous cavity. Its prevalence is increasing and now reaches 70-90% in some Asian populations1,2.

Light at Night and Cancer Risk¶

Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2004
Environmental lighting powerfully suppresses the physiologic release of melatonin, which typically peaks in the middle of the night. This decreased melatonin production has been hypothesized to increase the risk of cancer. Evidence from experimental studies supports a link between melatonin and tumor growth.

The influence of artificial light at night and polarized light on bird-building collisions

Biological Conservation, 2020
Collisions with buildings annually kill up to 1 billion birds in the United States. Bird-building collisions primarily occur at glass surfaces: birds often fail to perceive glass as a barrier and appear to be attracted to artificial light emitted from ...

Light at night, melatonin and breast cancer

Chronobiology International, 2013
A recent paper published in Chronobiology International hypothesized that exposure to light at night (LAN) is coincident with decreased melatonin secretion, epigenetic modifications and results in ...

Artificial light at night

Abstract What is artificial light pollution, and how does it affect the behaviour of animals and, in turn, populations? In this chapter, we review key literature that has framed our understanding of the two mechanisms by which artificial light (as an individual stressor) shifts animal behaviour: altering the nocturnal photic landscape ...

Lighting the night

We delved into the connections between TOA reflectance from VIIRS DNB during the day and night. A theoretical framework, backed by simulations, indicated the strong correlation between solar and lunar irradiance within the VIIRS DNB spectrum. This correlation paved the way for a machine learning model — specifically, multilayer perception — to link day

Long, light summer nights

Practical Pre-School, 2014
Brenda Williams' poem heralds the longest day on 21st June and encourages children to think about the differences between summer light and winter darkness, and make up some midsummer's night dreams!
