Right angle bends in light pipes: analysis
Applied Optics, 1976An expression for the fraction of incident radiation transmitted by a right angle bend in a rectangular light pipe is derived. This expression is used to show that, in a planar light pipe structure with right angle bends, light attenuation is due only to reflection losses at the walls if the launching angle is 45 degrees .

Transport of Light by Optical Fibers and Light Pipes
2014The principle of propagation of light rays in a glass cylinder is the base of the technology of optical fibers. The fabrication of an optical fiber requires a coating (fiber cladding), whose refractive index is lower than that of the central part (fiber core).

Semi-imaging light pipe for collecting weakly scattered light
SPIE Proceedings, 1998A simple reflective light pipe, formed from a cylindrical tube with an external reflective coating and a small central aperture, can be a highly efficient optical element for collecting light from molecular scattering processes along the path of a laser beam.
