Cylindrical mirror light pipes
Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, 1995Abstract The interplays between design and material parameters in a cylindrical mirror light pipe are discussed. The transmission is calculated exactly using a ray optics method. The result is an integral equation involving the mirror light pipe parameters, reflectivity and aspect ratio, and the angle of incidence of the incident radiation.

An expression is given for the transmission of the rectangular-section mirror light pipe. The expression is used to model throughputs for simulated solar conditions over a calender year. It is found that the splaying of a mirror light pipe results in a significant increase in throughputs particularly in winter months.

Aluminized Polystyrene Light Pipes
Review of Scientific Instruments, 1964Hollow tubes made of thin aluminized polystyrene sheets were used to pipe light from scintillation and Cherenkov radiators to photomultipliers. The light collection was found to be more than adequate in the geometries tested.
