Phytoplankton Distribution in Relation to Environmental Drivers on the North West European Shelf Sea.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
The edge of the North West European Shelf (NWES) is characterised by a steep continental slope and a northward flowing slope current. These topographic/hydrographic features separate oceanic water and shelf water masses hence potentially separate ...

Statistical-based sensitivity analysis and multi-objective optimizations as a design approach to window-integrated light-shelves based on daylight performance

open access: yesEnergy Nexus
This paper aims to address the deficiency of facade daylighting design techniques that balanced daylight provision and multi-criteria daylighting requirements by incorporating the window and light-shelf as two independent variables applied to a case ...

Light intensity, photoperiod duration, daily light flux and coral growth of Galaxea fascicularis in an aquarium setting: a matter of photons?

open access: yes, 2012
Light is one of the most important abiotic factors influencing the (skeletal) growth of scleractinian corals. Light stimulates coral growth by the process of light-enhanced calcification, which is mediated by zooxanthellar photosynthesis.

Seasonal variability of the warm Atlantic Water layer in the vicinity of the Greenland shelf break [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The warmest water reaching the east and west coast of Greenland is found between 200?m and 600?m. Whilst important for melting Greenland's outlet glaciers, limited winter observations of this layer prohibit determination of its seasonality.

Numerical simulations of a kilometre-thick Arctic ice shelf consistent with ice grounding observations

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Ice grounding features discovered in the Arctic Basin, in water depths exceeding 1 km and dated to the penultimate glacial, suggest a past Arctic ice shelf.

Tunable‐Threshold UV Dosimetry With Programmable Luminescent Tags via Oxygen‐Mediated Room‐Temperature Phosphorescence

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A fully organic UV threshold dosimeter is developed by exploiting the oxygen‐sensitive room‐temperature phosphorescence of a purely organic emitter in a polymer matrix. Upon reaching a specific cumulative UV dose, photochemical oxygen depletion triggers a sharp, high‐contrast emission.
