THE ACTION SPECTRUM OF SENSITIZATION TO HEAT WITH ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Physiology, 1945
1. Heat does not sensitize paramecia to ultraviolet light but ultraviolet light sensitizes them to heat. Paramecia of two species (Paramecium caudatum and P. multimicronucleate) are much more readily killed by heat at 42.3° C. if they are first exposed to ultraviolet light. 2.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Bumblebees land remarkably well in red–blue greenhouse LED light conditions

open access: yesBiology Open, 2020
Red–blue emitting LEDs have recently been introduced in greenhouses to optimise plant growth. However, this spectrum may negatively affect the performance of bumblebees used for pollination, because the visual system of bumblebees is more sensitive to ...

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Spectrum of the Light of the Glowworm [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1882
WHEN the subject of the phosphorescence of the Lampyridae came under discussion at the meeting of ths Entomological Society of London on February 4, 1880 (Proc. Ent. Soc., 1880, p. iii.) Mr. Meldola stated that “Some years ago he had examined the spectrum of the glowworm, and found that it was continuous, being rich in blue and green rays, and ...

Supersymmetry across the light and heavy-light hadronic spectrum. II.

open access: yesPhysical Review D, 2015
Relativistic light-front bound-state equations for mesons and baryons can be constructed in the chiral limit from the supercharges of a superconformal algebra which connect baryon and meson spectra. Quark masses break the conformal invariance, but the basic underlying supersymmetric mechanism, which transforms meson and baryon wave functions into each ...

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Influence of Light Spectra on the Production of Cannabinoids

open access: yesMedical Cannabis and Cannabinoids, 2020
In recent years, more attention has been paid to cannabis from both medical and political points of view. This study investigates the influence of 5 different light spectra on the active substance content in THC-poor hemp of the Alessia chemotype II ...
