Theory of ball lightning [PDF]

open access: yesSci. Rep. 6, 28263 (2016), 2014
We present a comprehensive theory on the formation of ball lightning, a luminous sphere sometimes observed after normal lightning. In a ball lightning event, a relativistic electron bunch can be produced by the stepped leader of lightning and coherently emit high-power microwave when striking the ground.

Seasonal Predictability of Lightning over the Global Hotspot Regions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Skillful seasonal prediction of lightning is crucial over several global hotspot regions, as it causes severe damages to infrastructures and losses of human life. While major emphasis has been given for predicting rainfall, prediction of lightning in one season advance remained uncommon, owing to the nature of the problem, which is short-lived local ...

Could macroscopic dark matter (macros) give rise to mini-lightning flashes out of a blue sky without clouds? [PDF]

open access: yesAtmosphere 2021, 12, 1230, 2021
A recent study pointed out that macroscopic dark matter (macros) traversing through the earth's atmosphere can give rise to hot and ionized channels similar to those associated with lightning leaders. The authors of the study investigated the possibility that when such channels created by macros pass through a thundercloud, lightning leaders may locked

Smart CMOS image sensor for lightning detection and imaging [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We present a CMOS image sensor dedicated to lightning detection and imaging. The detector has been designed to evaluate the potentiality of an on-chip lightning detection solution based on a smart sensor.

Canadian contributions to environmetrics

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Statistics, Volume 50, Issue 4, Page 1355-1386, December 2022., 2022
Abstract This article focuses on the importance of collaboration in statistics by Canadian researchers and highlights the contributions that Canadian statisticians have made to many research areas in environmetrics. We provide a discussion about different vehicles that have been developed for collaboration by Canadians in the environmetrics context as ...

A Maintenance Cost Study of Transformers Based on Markov Model Utilizing Frequency of Transition Approach

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
In this paper, a maintenance cost study of transformers based on the Markov Model (MM) utilizing the Health Index (HI) is presented. In total, 120 distribution transformers of oil type (33/11 kV and 30 MVA) are examined.

The rarity of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We report on the first search for Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) from altitudes where they are thought to be produced. The Airborne Detector for Energetic Lightning Emissions (ADELE), an array of gamma-ray detectors, was flown near the tops of ...

Correlation between Frequency-Divided Magnetic Field and Channel-Base Current for Rocket-Triggered Lightning

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
Different discharge processes of triggered lightning can radiate electromagnetic signals with different frequency bands. During the triggered-lightning experiment conducted at the Field Experiment Base on Lightning Sciences of China Meteorological ...
