Analysis of Inverted Charge Structure and Lightning Activity during the 8.14 Local Hailstorm on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2023
In this paper, the charge structure and lightning activity characteristics of the thunderstorm that occurred on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau on 14 August 2014 were analyzed using data collected from a three-dimensional (3D) lightning very-high-frequency ...

Lightning activity during the 1999 Superior derecho [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2002
On 4 July 1999, a severe convective windstorm, known as a derecho, caused extensive damage to forested regions along the United States/Canada border, west of Lake Superior. There were 665,000 acres of forest destroyed in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Canada, with approximately 12.5 million

Selective Targeting of Immune Checkpoints HLA‐G and CD47 Using Novel Dual Signaling Protein DSP216 Promotes Innate Anticancer Immunity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The inhibitory immune checkpoints HLA‐G and CD47 are expressed on certain tumor types and inhibit immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. DSP216 binds specifically to cancer cells expressing both HLA‐G and CD47, and blocks their inhibitory signaling.

Seasonal Variability of Lightning Activity in Yakutia in 2009–2019

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2020
The instrumental continuous monitoring of lightning activity in Yakutia has been carried by the lightning direction finder since the 2000s. Devices for detection of sferic (very low frequency radio pulses emitted by lightning discharges) in Yakutia were ...

Cloud-to-ground lightning in Portugal: patterns and dynamical forcing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
An analysis of the cloud-to-ground discharges (CGD) over Portugal is carried out using data collected by a network of sensors maintained by the Portuguese Meteorological Institute for 2003–2009 (7 yr).

Global lightning activity from the ENSO perspective [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2008
The recently reprocessed (1998–2006) OTD/LIS space‐based lightning database is used to investigate the global lightning climatology in response to the ENSO cycle. Temporal correlation maps depicting lightning anomalies‐NINO3.4 identify areas that generally follow patterns similar to the widely documented ENSO‐related precipitation anomalies.

Atomic Scale Ordering of Liquid Water at a Dynamic Pt(111) Interface Under Electrochemical Conditions Imaged by Electron Holography

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
High resolution electron holography was used to image the projected electric potential of ordered water layers at the interface to a platinum (111) electrode. The observed reorganization of the water layers upon applying external potentials suggests that the electric potential drop of the electric double layer is mainly carried by the polarization ...

Controls on interannual variability in lightning-caused fire activity in the western US

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2016
Lightning-caused wildfires account for a majority of burned area across the western United States (US), yet lightning remains among the more unpredictable spatiotemporal aspects of the fire environment and a challenge for both modeling and managing fire ...

Very low latitude (L = 1.08) whistlers and correlation with lightning activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We present analysis of more than 2000 lightning-generated whistlers recorded at a low-latitude station, located at Allahabad (geographic latitude, 25.40N; geographic longitude, 81.93E; L = 1.081), India, during December 2010 to November 2011.
