Mapping lightning fatality risk

2014 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2014
A new method to calculate lightning fatality risk is presented. This new method uses GIS software to multiply lightning flash density and population density on a grid and display the results on a map. The method is verified against observed lightning fatalities in the United States and appears to work well.

Engineers map volcanic lightning

IEEE Spectrum, 2009
Volcanic eruptions are often accompanied by spectacular bursts of lightning-Krakatoa, Mount St. Helens, and Vesuvius have provided some relatively recent examples- and yet these breathtaking bolts are not well understood. Obtaining insight into volcanic lightning, besides being of considerable scientific interest, could make it possible to get earlier ...

Radar Precipitation Maps as Lightning Indicators

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1978
Abstract Radar maps of precipitation at a height of 6 km have been studied for the thunderstorms of one July day. Regions on these maps within which the intensity level exceeds 30 dBZ (corresponding to a rainfall rate of 2.8 mm h−1) represent thunderstorms, some single-celled and some multi-celled.

Lightning data mapping of West Java province

2017 International Conference on Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (ICECOS), 2017
Historical lightning data could be use to evaluate certain transmission line in power system network. By using historical data from lightning detection system with combined Magnetic Direction Finder and Time of Arrival method, lightning data mapping for West Java province was presented in this paper.

Mapping lightning processes using fuzzy inference system

2002 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence. 2002 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems. FUZZ-IEEE'02. Proceedings (Cat. No.02CH37291), 2003
This paper describes a novel approach for mapping lightning processes using fuzzy logic. The core regarding lightning process is to identify and to model those uncertain information on mathematical principles. In fact, the lightning process involves several nonlinear features that our current mathematical tools would not be able to model.

Field Mapping Techniques for Lightning Protection

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace, 1963
The lightning mast and overhead ground wire are well-established methods for protecting structures from direct lightning strokes. The advent of space vehicles and missiles with stored or contained propellants, and the exposure of extremely sensitive circuitry, compel the design engineer to investigate the degree of lightning hazard and to inquire into ...

Simultaneous detection of lightning flashes by MMIA-ASIM and Colombia Lightning Mapping Array

2020
<p>Since April 2018, the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) has been in operation on board the International Space Station (ISS). ASIM is composed of the Modular X-and Gamma Ray Sensor (MXGS) as well as a multispectral and high resolution array of photometers and cameras, called the Modular Multispectral Imaging Array ...

Lightning Thunderstorms Day Maps for Saudi Arabia

2008 Joint International Conference on Power System Technology and IEEE Power India Conference, 2008
One of the main objectives of this original research is to establish and develop the annual and seasonal maps of the Isokeraunic level (Thunders days, Td) for the country. Also, collect and document thunderstorms and lightning activities in Saudi Arabia and present the steps of development and validation of these authentic maps.

LOFAR for lightning-interferometery and mapping

2017
We show that a new observation mode at the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) for Lightning-Interferometery and Mapping (LIM) allows for lightning observations with a resolution that is at least an order of magnitude better than presently operating Lightning Napping Arrays LMAs.
