Mapping lightning in the sky with a mini array [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
AbstractMini arrays are commonly used for infrasonic and seismic studies. Here we report for the first time the detection and mapping of distant lightning discharges in the sky with a mini array. The array has a baseline to wavelength ratio ∼4.2·10−2 to record very low frequency electromagnetic waves from 2 to 18 kHz.

On the classification of self-triggered versus other-triggered lightning flashes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We present in this paper lightning current measurements and LMA (Lightning Mapping Array) data associated with upward flashes observed at the Sàntis Tower during Summer 2017.

Thunderstorm charge structures favouring cloud-to-ground lightning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Thunderstorm electrical structures favouring cloud-to-ground lightning were investigated through a Lightning Mapping Array (LMA), an accurate three-dimensional lightning location system that allows inferring the heights of the regions of charge.

Polarimetric radar characteristics of lightning initiation and propagating channels [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2019
In this paper we present an analysis of a large dataset of lightning and polarimetric weather radar data collected in the course of a lightning measurement campaign that took place in the summer of 2017 in the area surrounding Säntis, in the northeastern

Image Navigation for FY-4A Lightning Mapping Imager

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2021
Navigation of images from lightning mapping instruments in geostationary orbits is very important for data applications. However, few scientific peer-reviewed papers have been reported, except a few works in the prelaunch tests. On December 11, 2016, China launched the three-axis stabilized geostationary meteorological satellite Fengyun-4A (FY-4A ...

A New Approach of 3D Lightning Location Based on Pearson Correlation Combined with Empirical Mode Decomposition

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
To improve the accuracy of pulse matching and the mapping quality of lightning discharges, the Pearson correlation method combined with empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is introduced for discharge electric field pulse matching.
