Multidimensional Performance Limit State for Hazard Fragility Functions

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 2011
This paper addresses an alternative methodology to calculate fragility functions that considers multiple limit states parameters, such as combinations of response variables of accelerations and interstory drifts. Limit states are defined using a generalized multidi- mensional limit states function that allows considering dependencies among limit ...

Reliability index for non-normal distributions of limit state functions

Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2017
Reliability analysis is a probabilistic approach to determine a safety level of a system. Reliability is defined as a probability of a system (or a structure, in structural engineering) to functionally perform under given conditions. In the 1960s, Basler defined the reliability index as a measure to elucidate the safety level of the system, which until

Comparison of the Function Regression Method and Data Classification Method for Limit State Function Approximation

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
To reduce the computational burden of the reliability analysis of complex engineering application, approximate method is always used to construct the surrogate model of the implicit limit state function. Since the limit state function is a classifier of the failure domain and safe domain, its approximation can be established by the function regression ...

Constructions of Limit State Functions

2020
The observations or measurements from real devices or objects, as, e.g., in natural sciences (such as physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, meteorology) as well as in social sciences (such as economics, psychology, sociology) are analyzed and ordered in order to describe them (approximate) by mathematical concepts, in mathematical terms.

Limitations of density functional theory in application to degenerate states

Journal of Computational Chemistry, 1997
It is shown that the claims that density functional theory (DFT) can handle orbitally degenerate states are ungrounded. The constraint search formulation of DFT allows one to determine a set of densities and eigenvalues for the degenerate term that, however, are neither observables, nor can they be used to solve the system of coupled equations for the ...

An efficient formulation for limit state function gradient calculation

Computers & Structures, 1994
Summary: In the first-order second moment (FOSM) reliability analysis, the gradients of the limit state function with respect to the basic random variables need to be calculated. For complex structures, these calculations can often be performed with the use of the probabilistic finite element routines.

The geometry of limit state function graphs and subset simulation: Counterexamples

Reliability Engineering & System Safety, 2019
Abstract In the last fifteen years the subset sampling method has often been used in reliability problems as a tool for calculating small probabilities. This method is extrapolating from an initial Monte Carlo estimate, for which the probability content of a failure domain found by a suitable higher level of the original limit state function.

Functional limitations among adult cancer survivors in the United States

Journal of Cancer Survivorship
Using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), this study examined the odds of functional limitations across nine domains by cancer status (with vs. without cancer history) and age group (18-44, 45-64, 65 + years).Participants were 151,509 adults in the 2014-2018 NHIS.

Microcracking and cracking limit state as functions of strain gradients for concrete

Cement and Concrete Research, 1987
Abstract The behaviour of micro-concrete under tensile conditions has been studied in terms of the strain gradients. Dealing with the problem within the mechanics of simple body media, then it appears that the cracking limit state criterion is a function of the strain gradients. There is an increase of the threshold in stress and in strain.
