Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Pheno- and genotypic characterization and identification of novel subtypes of Peste des Petits Ruminants virus in domestic and captive wild goats in Northern Iraq

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2021
Highlights 1. Assessment and detection of source of re-emergence of Peste des Petits Ruminants virus in goats. 2. High rate of mortality than morbidity in domestic and captive wild goat herds. 3. Identification of novel sub-types (I&II) of lineage IV. 4.

Diversity of clonal complex 22 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates in Kuwait hospitals

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
CC22-MRSA is a major MRSA lineage that is widely reported globally. To characterize CC22-MRSA for trends in antibiotic resistance and emergence of variants, a total of 636 CC22 isolates identified by DNA microarray in 2016 (n = 195), 2017 (n = 227) and ...

In vitro models of cancer‐associated fibroblast heterogeneity uncover subtype‐specific effects of CRISPR perturbations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

Epidemiological Review of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) in Japan: From Discovery and Spread to Economic Losses and Future Prospects

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) poses a significant economic challenge to Japan’s swine industry. This review synthesizes the epidemiological evolution of PRRSV in Japan by examining the available scientific literature from ...

Endogenous Wnt signalling in human embryonic stem cells generates an equilibrium of distinct lineage-specified progenitors. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The pluripotent nature of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) makes them convenient for deriving therapeutically relevant cells. Here we show using Wnt reporter hESC lines that the cells are heterogeneous with respect to endogenous Wnt signalling activity.

Cis‐regulatory and long noncoding RNA alterations in breast cancer – current insights, biomarker utility, and the critical need for functional validation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The noncoding region of the genome plays a key role in regulating gene expression, and mutations within these regions are capable of altering it. Researchers have identified multiple functional noncoding mutations associated with increased cancer risk in the genome of breast cancer patients.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of DENV-2 Asian-American genotype lineages in the Americas. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The Asian/American (AS/AM) genotype of dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2) has been evolving in the Americas over the last 30 years, leading to several waves of dengue epidemics and to the emergence of different viral lineages in the region.

Prevalence and genomic characterization of rotavirus group A genotypes in piglets from southern highlands and eastern Tanzania

open access: yesHeliyon, 2022
Animals have been identified as the potential reservoirs of rotavirus group A (RVA) for human infection. However, very little is known regarding the genotype and genomic profiles of circulating RVA in Tanzanian piglets.
