Lipid Lowering Therapy in the Elderly: Is there a Benefit?

open access: yesCurrent Pharmaceutical Design, 2006
The rising number of elderly people has a major impact on healthcare systems. Advancing age is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which represents a major global healthcare problem. The clinical efficacy and safety of lipid lowering treatment (especially statins) is well established following a series of large-scale ...

Personalize and Optimize Lipid-Lowering Therapies

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Cardiology, 2016
IMPROVE-IT (Improved Reduction of Outcomes: Vytorin Efficacy International Trial) demonstrated that intensive lipid-lowering therapy with ezetimibe/simvastatin reduced first and subsequent cardiovascular events compared with placebo/simvastatin.

Association of Lowering Low‐Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol With Contemporary Lipid‐Lowering Therapies and Risk of Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2019
Background The relationship between lowering LDL (low‐density lipoprotein) cholesterol with contemporary lipid‐lowering therapies and incident diabetes mellitus (DM) remains uncertain.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Effect of statins on venous thromboembolic events: a meta-analysis of published and unpublished evidence from randomised controlled trials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background - It has been suggested that statins substantially reduce the risk of venous thromboembolic events. We sought to test this hypothesis by performing a meta-analysis of both published and unpublished results from randomised trials of statins.

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Retrospective assessment of the effectiveness of lipid-lowering therapy in patients with hypertriglyceridemia in real-world clinical practice

open access: yesКардиоСоматика
BACKGROUND: Elevated triglyceride levels—hypertriglyceridemia, representing an imbalance of lipid parameters—play a key role in contemporary lipid metabolism research and are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. An

Transcriptional profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles from prebiopsy prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RNA profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) from blood samples of men undergoing prostate biopsy identifies transcripts associated with clinically significant prostate cancer. Integrative analysis with public tumor datasets links EV‐derived gene signatures to tumor stage and progression‐free survival, highlighting CASP3, XRCC2, and RIT1 ...
