Liquid Crystals in Tribology [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2009
Two decades ago, the literature dealing with the possible applications of low molar mass liquid crystals, also called monomer liquid crystals (MLCs), only included about 50 references. Today, thousands of papers, conference reports, books or book chapters and patents refer to the study and applications of MLCs as lubricants and lubricant additives and ...

Layered liquid crystal elastomer actuators

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are soft, anisotropic materials that exhibit large shape transformations when subjected to various stimuli. Here we demonstrate a facile approach to enhance the out-of-plane work capacity of these materials by an ...

Regimes in the Response of Photomechanical Materials

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
Photomechanical materials perform mechanical work in response to illumination. Photoisomerization-based photomechanical materials may operate in different regimes depending on the intensity of the illuminating light.

Suppression of crystalline fluctuations by competing structures in a supercooled liquid [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 96, 042602 (2017), 2017
We propose a geometrical characterization of amorphous liquid structures that suppress crystallization by competing locally with crystalline order. We introduce for this purpose the crystal affinity of a liquid, a simple measure of its propensity to accumulate local crystalline structures on cooling.

Hierarchical organization in liquid crystal-in-liquid crystal emulsions [PDF]

open access: yesSoft Matter, 2014
In emulsions formed from two immiscible liquid crystals, the orientations of the liquid crystals are coupled.

Modeling and Computation of Liquid Crystals [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Liquid crystal is a typical kind of soft matter that is intermediate between crystalline solids and isotropic fluids. The study of liquid crystals has made tremendous progress over the last four decades, which is of great importance on both fundamental scientific researches and widespread applications in industry.

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae amino acid transporter Lyp1 has a broad substrate spectrum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yeast Amino acid Transporter family members mediate the import of amino acids, ranging from substrate specialists to generalists. Here, we show that the specialist transporter, Lyp1, has a broader substrate spectrum than previously described, with affinity constants spanning from micromolar to millimolar.

Effect of Crowding Agent Polyethylene Glycol on Lyotropic Chromonic Liquid Crystal Phases of Disodium Cromoglycate

open access: yesCrystals, 2019
Adding crowding agents such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) to lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) formed by water dispersions of materials such as disodium cromoglicate (DSCG) leads to a phase separation of the isotropic phase and the ordered phase.

Flowing Liquid Crystal Simulating the Schwarzschild Metric [PDF]

open access: yesCentral Eur.J.Phys.9:1100-1105,2011, 2009
We show how to simulate the equatorial section of the Schwarzschild metric through a flowing liquid crystal in its nematic phase. Inside a liquid crystal in the nematic phase, a traveling light ray feels an effective metric, whose properties are linked to perpendicular and parallel refractive indexes, $n_o$ e $n_e$ respectively, of the rod-like ...
