Colloquium : disclination loops, point defects, and all that in nematic liquid crystals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The homotopy theory of topological defects is a powerful tool for organizing and unifying many ideas across a broad range of physical systems. Recently, experimental progress was made in controlling and measuring colloidal inclusions in liquid ...

Comparative assessment of Al2O3, CuO, and Al2O3-CuO Co-doping on the structural, optical, thermal, mechanical, and gamma-ray shielding properties of Bi2O3-B2O3-K2O glass system

open access: yesNext Materials
This study compares the impact of Al2O3, CuO, and Al2O3-CuO co-doping on the structural, optical, thermal, mechanical, and gamma (γ)-ray shielding properties of the B2O3-Bi2O3-K2O (BBK) glass system.

A perspective on the Langmuir adsorption model applied to molecular liquid crystals containing ions and nanoparticles

open access: yesFrontiers in Soft Matter, 2022
Electrical properties of molecular liquid crystals doped with nanomaterials have been extensively studied over the past two decades. In general, nanoparticles in liquid crystals can play a dual role acting as either ion capturing agents or ion generating

Transmissive Multilayer Geometric Phase Gratings Using Water-Soluble Alignment Material

open access: yesCrystals
Multilayer liquid crystal devices can offer enhanced optical functionalities for augmented reality and photonic applications, but fabrication remains severely limited by solvent incompatibility between photoalignment materials and underlying polymerized ...

Liquid-crystalline behavior on dumbbell-shaped colloids and the observation of chiral blue phases

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Colloidal liquid crystals account for various applications due to the combination of characteristics relevant for liquid crystals and colloids. The authors elaborate the impact of concave geometry on the properties of colloidal liquid crystals for ...

Liquid Crystals as Organogelators: Liquid Crystals Gelled Organic Liquids

open access: yesJournal of Oleo Science, 2006
Gelation tests of rod like liquid crystals (LCs), columnar LCs, and cholesteric LCs rod-like have been employed. 4-Cyanophenyl 4-n-alkoxybenzoates, 4-cyano-4’-alkoxybiphenyls, 4,4’-dialkanoyloxybiphenyls, azoxybenzene derivatives, 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaalkoxytriphenylenes, and cholesteryl esters, except for cholesteryl alkyl carbonates and cholesteryl ...

Liquid Crystals in Tribology [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2009
Two decades ago, the literature dealing with the possible applications of low molar mass liquid crystals, also called monomer liquid crystals (MLCs), only included about 50 references. Today, thousands of papers, conference reports, books or book chapters and patents refer to the study and applications of MLCs as lubricants and lubricant additives and ...

Chirality amplification by desymmetrization of chiral ligand-capped nanoparticles to nanorods quantified in soft condensed matter

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
The mechanisms by which molecular chirality is amplified through space and across length scales is of great interest. Here the authors show how gold nanorods covered in chiral dopants are more efficient in transducing chiral information compared to other

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Pixelated Photonic Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, 2023
Photonic crystals can prevent or allow light of certain frequencies to propagate in distinct directions in anomalous and useful ways for use as waveguides, laser cavities, and topological light propagation.
