Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Optical Kossel Lines and Fluorescence in Photonic Liquid Crystals

open access: yes, 2020
We propose a general analytical way to describe the fluorescence peculiarities in photonic liquid crystals (revealing themselves as an optical analog of the X-ray Kossel lines in conventional crystals) based at the localized optical edge modes existing ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Terahertz Spectroscopic Imaging of Polymorphic Forms in Pharmaceutical Crystals

open access: yes, 2018
A terahertz spectroscopic imaging system was fabricated for the detection of two-dimensional molecular distributions in pharmaceutical tablets based on absorption peaks of intermolecular or intramolecular hydrogen bonds in crystals. The terahertz imaging

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Fredericksz transition threshold in nematic liquid crystals filled with ferroelectric nano-particles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
A key liquid crystalline property for electro-optic applications is the Frederiks threshold electric field. There has been recent experimental interest in liquid crystal-based colloidal suspensions in which the colloidal nanoparticles both possess a ...

Peculiarities in the Director Reorientation and the NMR Spectra Evolution in a Nematic Liquid Crystals under the Effect of Crossed Electric and Magnetic Fields

open access: yesCrystals, 2019
The illustrative description of the field-induced peculiarities of the director reorientation in the microsized nematic volumes under the effect of crossed magnetic B and electric E fields have been proposed.
