The persistence of multiple strains of avian influenza in live bird markets [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2017
Multiple subtypes of avian influenza (AI) and novel reassortants are frequently isolated from live bird markets (LBMs). However, our understanding of the drivers of persistence of multiple AI subtypes is limited. We propose a stochastic model of AI transmission within an LBM that incorporates market size, turnover rate and the balance of direct versus ...

Extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales in live and dead birds from rural poultry farms and urban live bird markets of Bangladesh. [PDF]

open access: yesFront Microbiol
IntroductionPoultry raised with antibiotic prophylaxis are significant reservoirs of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E). Improper disposal of poultry wastes is common in developing countries, increasing the risk of spreading ESBL-E. Previous studies largely focused on ESBL-producing E.

Campylobacter positivity and public health risks in live bird markets in Busia, Kenya: A value chain analysis. [PDF]

open access: yesTransbound Emerg Dis, 2022
Live bird markets (LBMs) provide integral hubs for 95% of poultry produced for food. Surveillance systems in LBMs serving smallholder farmers in sub-saharan Africa are often non-functional, and data about public health risks and emerging pathogens are ...

Risk Areas for Influenza A(H5) Environmental Contamination in Live Bird Markets, Dhaka, Bangladesh. [PDF]

open access: yesEmerg Infect Dis, 2021
We evaluated the presence of influenza A(H5) virus environmental contamination in live bird markets (LBMs) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. By using Bernoulli generalized linear models and multinomial logistic regression models, we quantified LBM-level factors associated with market work zone-specific influenza A(H5) virus contamination patterns.

Food Markets with Live Birds as Source of Avian Influenza

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2006
A patient may have been infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 in Guangzhou, People's Republic of China, at a food market that had live birds. Virus genes were detected in 1 of 79 wire cages for birds at 9 markets. One of 110 persons in the poultry business at markets had neutralizing antibody against H5N1.

Surveillance for avian influenza viruses in wild birds at live bird markets, Egypt, 2014-2016. [PDF]

open access: yesInfluenza Other Respir Viruses, 2019
AimEgypt is the habitat for a large number of bird species and serves as a vital stopover for millions of migratory birds during their annual migration between the Palearctic and Afrotropical ecozones. Surveillance for avian influenza viruses (AIVs) is critical to assessing risks for potential spreading of these viruses among domestic poultry ...
