Predicting the risk of avian influenza A H7N9 infection in live-poultry markets across Asia [PDF]
Two epidemic waves of an avian influenza A (H7N9) virus have so far affected China. Most human cases have been attributable to poultry exposure at live-poultry markets, where most positive isolates were sampled.

Live poultry markets (LPMs) are veterinary and public health risks because of potential for zoonotic spillover of pathogens from diseased animals to humans. To control these health risks, veterinary and public health authorities in Asia, including China, have closed or restricted LPMs.

Avian influenza viruses in Korean live poultry markets and their pathogenic potential
We surveyed live-poultry markets in Korea in 2003 and isolated 9 H9N2, 6 H3N2, and 1 H6N1 influenza viruses. Antigenic and phylogenetic analyses showed that all 9 H9N2 isolates were of A/Chicken/Korea/25232-96006/96-like lineage (which caused disease in chickens in Korea in 1996) but were different from H9N2 viruses of southeastern China.

More diversified antibiotic resistance genes in chickens and workers of the live poultry markets
Poultry farms and LPMs are a reservoir of antimicrobial resistant bacteria and resistance genes from feces. The LPM is an important interface between humans, farm animals, and environments in a typical urban environment, and it is considered a reservoir for ARGs and viruses.

Antibiotic resistance gene reservoir in live poultry markets
Journal of Infection, 2019The heavy use of antibiotics in farm animals contributes to the enrichment and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in "one-health" settings. Numerous ARGs have been identified in livestock-associated environments but not in Chinese live poultry markets (LPMs).We collected 753 poultry fecal samples from LPMs of 18 provinces and municipalities ...

Social network analysis of the movement of poultry to and from live bird markets in Bali and Lombok, Indonesia [PDF]
Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has resulted in large losses to the Indonesian poultry sector. Evidence suggests that live bird markets (LBMs) play an important role in the epidemiology of the disease.
