ABSTRACT Background Therapeutic apheresis (TA) is an established treatment modality for hematologic, neurologic, and immunologic disorders, yet access remains severely limited in sub‐Saharan Africa. Donor apheresis, including platelet apheresis collection from healthy donors, represents an important complementary modality supporting blood product ...

ABSTRACT Background Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post‐peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic‐related disruptions remains uncertain.

OPTIMIZING TRAIN CAR PASSENGER LOADING VIA PLATFORM ESCALATOR DIRECTIONS
Uneven passenger distribution among train cars induces unnecessary crowding, which has a negative impact on the metro systems’ service level by increasing dwelling time and causing discomfort.

Optimal and Alternating-Direction Load Balancing Schemes [PDF]
We discuss iterative nearest neighbor load balancing schemes on processor networks which are represented by a cartesian product of graphs like e.g. tori or hypercubes. By the use of the Alternating-Direction Loadbalancing scheme, the number of load balance iterations decreases by a factor of 2 for this type of graphs.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Effects of cyclic loading directions on liquefaction characteristics of saturated coral sand
The large scale construction of both military and civil infrastructures located in Nansha reefs and offshore marine areas, South China Sea, has raised the seismic safety a challenging issue for the projects in the region. The influences of fines content (
