Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

The local descentralisation and the issues of municipal bonds in Romania [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper work analyses the connection between local financial decentralization and the potential of local public administration to sustain the local economic and social development by its own forces by taking part to the capital market.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Elasticities of Regional and Local Administrations Expenditures - the Portuguese case [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This work analyzes the evolution of real public expenditures of local and regional administrations (LRA), in Portugal, in the period after the Second World War. It also aims to estimate the elasticities associated to determinants, which explain the found

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

Collective Risks in Local Administrations: Can a Private Insurer Be Better than a Public Mutual Fund? [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper we consider the institutional arrangements needed in a decentralised framework to cope with the potential adverse welfare effects caused by localized negative shocks (e.g., natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or even clinical errors) that
