INTRAVENOUS LOCAL ANESTHESIA [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1912
In searching for a method to avoid the difficulties of nerve-blocking anesthesia, Bier 1 developed the idea of Venenanasthesie which he reported at the thirty-seventh German Surgical Congress, in 1908. In 1909, he reported a series of 134 cases and gave in detail the technic of the method. 2 The anesthetizing solution is injected into the veins, in a

The Thermodynamics of General and Local Anesthesia [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2014
General anesthetics are known to cause depression of the freezing point of transitions in biomembranes. This is a consequence of ideal mixing of the anesthetic drugs in the membrane fluid phase and exclusion from the solid phase. Such a generic law provides physical justification of the famous Meyer-Overton rule.

Electroencephalographic depression after abruptly increasing partial pressure of end-tidal carbon dioxide: a case series

open access: yesBMC Anesthesiology
Background Prolonged electroencephalographic depression during surgery is associated with poor outcomes for patients. However, the published literature on electroencephalographic depression caused by a sudden increase in the partial pressure of end-tidal

Blocking the voltage‐gated sodium channel hNav1.5 as a novel pH‐dependent mechanism of action for tamoxifen

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Patch‐clamp recordings revealed that tamoxifen inhibits voltage‐gated sodium channels, especially under acidic conditions, both common in metastatic cancer cells. These effects may explain certain antitumor properties of tamoxifen, highlighting a novel mechanism of action beyond its known endocrine effects.

The Prevalence of Advance Directives and Its Moderators Among Community People, Acutely and Chronically Ill Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

open access: yesInquiry: The Journal of Health Care Organization, Provision, and Financing
Advance Directives (ADs) are essential in end-of-life care, enabling individuals to retain autonomy when they can no longer make decisions. However, data on ADs prevalence and influencing factors in different populations (acutely ill, chronically ill ...

Rapid quantification and PK-PD modeling of rocuronium bromide in beagles using portable mass spectrometer

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science
Monitoring rocuronium bromide (Rocur) concentrations is crucial for assessing muscle relaxation in clinical anesthesia. However, no suitable instruments are currently available. This study explores the application of a portable mass spectrometer (MS) for

Quantitative Iron Measurements in the Basal Ganglia of NBIA Patients Using QSM: Insights From a Tertiary Center

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) comprises rare genetic disorders characterized by predominantly extrapyramidal symptoms and iron deposition in the basal ganglia. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detects qualitative changes but cannot accurately quantify iron accumulation. Quantitative susceptibility
