Contrast gain and power savings using local dimming backlights

Journal of the Society for Information Display, 2008
Abstract— The contrast and power consumption of today's liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs) can be improved substantially by introducing (local) dimming backlights. In fact, infinite dynamic contrast and power savings of well over 50% have been claimed for such displays.

67.2: Compensation Methods for Local‐Dimming Backlights with RGB‐LED

SID Symposium Digest of Technical Papers, 2010
Abstract In LED backlight system with high optical independence inside a segmented block, using individually controllable RGB‐LED as light source, we can obtain the advantage of wider color gamut, lower power consumption, and wider range of LCD expression than using white‐LED. On the other hand, there are problems

64.2: Spatio‐temporally Consistent Video Processing for Local Backlight Dimming

SID Symposium Digest of Technical Papers, 2008
Abstract Locally addressable backlights allow the contrast of LCDs to be improved while simultaneously reducing power consumption. for optimal performance, the associated video processing algorithms should prevent the backlight structure from appearing in the front‐of‐screen (FOS) image.

Locally pixel‐compensated backlight dimming on LED‐backlit LCD TV

Journal of the Society for Information Display, 2007
Abstract— The pixel brightness of an LCD panel perceived by a user is the product of the backlight brightness and the panel transmittance. In conventional LCD panels, the backlight brightness is constant and always at peak luminance. This design suffers from light leakage and power waste problems at dark scenes.

Viewing Distance-Based Perceived Error Control for Local Backlight Dimming

Journal of Display Technology, 2015
This paper presents an effective local dimming algorithm that preserves the perceived image quality consistently in the backlight dimmed images regardless of viewing distances. The proposed algorithm determines the clipped points of each LED block by limiting the maximum size of image area to be distorted, and guarantying the minimum image quality in ...

Research and Evaluation of Local Dimming Algorithm for LED Backlight LCD Display

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
Based on the further study on the dynamic dimming algorithms, the Inverse of Mapping Function (IMF) method, the error correction method and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) method are analyzed and applied to get the dimming level in the bottom-lit backlight. 50 typical images are simulated. The power reduction, contrast ratio enhancement, and

Critical Backlight Luminance for Reducing Clipping Artifacts in Local Dimming LCDs

Chinese Journal of Liquid Crystals and Displays, 2012
A critical backlight luminance method to get balance between clipping artifacts and power consumption in local dimming LCDs is proposed.Firstly, the critical backlight luminance of middle backlight blocks and edge backlight blocks are computed with different process. Then the critical luminance is compared with the backlight luminance computed by ...

50.2: Power Savings by Local Dimming on a LCD Panel with Side Lit Backlight

SID Symposium Digest of Technical Papers, 2009
Abstract Local dimming of segmented direct lit backlights is a known technique to save power and improve the contrast. Also there is a trend towards slim side lit panels. with proper LED‐drivers and algorithms both technologies can be combined. The power saving can be doubled compared to a global dimmed backlight.
