Towards a framework for assessing the sustainability of local economic development based on natural resources: honeybush tea in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

open access: yes, 2017
Despite the popularity of local economic development (LED) as a job creation and economic growth strategy in South Africa, many LED projects have not proved to be sustainable in the long-run, especially where human systems interact with biological ones ...

Analysis of Local Water Humidity Effect Characteristics Based on Meteorological Data: A Case Study of Nanjing

open access: yesAtmosphere
In order to explore the variation law and causes of the humidity effect of local water bodies, this paper selects the data of encrypted automatic weather stations (encrypted stations) and national conventional meteorological stations (conventional ...

Distributed localization in cluttered underwater environments

open access: yesProceedings of the Fifth ACM International Workshop on UnderWater Networks - WUWNet '10, 2010
Mapping and exploration of closed fluid tanks, such as nuclear waste storage tanks and water sewage treatment ponds, by a swarm of underwater robots requires them to be aware of their positions, as they traverse the depths of the tank. This paper considers the challenges faced in localizing robots using reference-based localization in such clutter ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

The Hydrolyzation and Hydrolysis Rates of Chlorodifluoromethane during Catalytic Hydrolysis over Solid Acid (Base) MoO3(MgO)/ZrO2 Catalyst

open access: yesCrystals, 2022
Chlorodifluoromethane (HCFC-22) is one of the air pollutants that destroy the ozone layer and warm the earth. In order to degrade HCFC-22, the catalytic hydrolysis method is currently the most effective environmental technology.

Partitioned environments for visual localization

open access: yes2018 26th Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2018
In this paper, we present a novel sequential visual localization algorithm in partitioned route. The algorithm utilizes Monte-Carlo for accurate visual localization. Partitioning the route into several regions produces higher accuracy along with lower computational cost. Each of the regions is represented using independent maps. We use bag-of-words for

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

“By and for local people”: Assessing the connection between local energy plans and community energy

open access: yes, 2019
“Community energy” (CE) is argued to be an opportunity to transition to low-carbon energy systems while creating additional benefits for local communities. CE is defined as energy initiatives that place a high degree of emphasis on participation of local

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Security as a foundation for developing the process of resocialization, readaptation and reintegration in the local environment.

open access: yesPolish Journal of Social Rehabilitation, 2018
The text deals with the role of broadly understood security as a necessary foundation for the implementation of the process of resocialization, reintegration and readaptation in the local environment.
