WOOD AND (FOREST) LOGGING RESIDUES AS FUEL [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Les je eden izmed najbolj pomembnih obnovljivih materialov. Kot odpadek se pojavlja v lesni proizvodnji, lahko ga ponovno uporabimo za lesne izdelke ali pa v energetske namene.

Ionomycin suppresses cancer cell growth by disrupting mitochondrial transcription

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, we identify a new function for the selective Ca2+ ionophore, ionomycin, as an inhibitor of mitochondrial transcription. Both total and nascent RNA analyses revealed that ionomycin treatment reduces the transcription of mitochondrial genes.

Analysis of logging forest residues as an energy source

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Informatics, 2018
Forest residue extraction levels in Greece are currently very low, but logging residues have the potential to be an important component of the wood energy supply chain. Forests are a major supplier of renewable energy. Exploring the possibilities of utilizing the biomass of logging residues for energy requires analysis and knowledge of its properties ...

Delivery of DNA‐encoded vaccines and proteins in mice using cutaneous suction‐mediated transfection

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cutaneous suction‐mediated transfection in mice for delivery of DNA‐encoded vaccines and proteins. A critical limitation of DNA vaccines and other therapeutics is transfection in vivo to produce the encoded antigens or therapeutic proteins. Cutaneous suction‐based methods have demonstrated effectiveness in many animal models and have been successfully ...

Avidin is evolutionarily conserved in fish but dispensable for development and resistance against Streptococcus agalactiae in zebrafish

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The presence of biotin‐binding avidin proteins in fish and their biological significance are poorly characterized. We cataloged fish avidins and demonstrate that they are widely present and evolutionarily conserved. We created avd knockout zebrafish and show that zebavidin is dispensable for development and that resistance of avd knockout embryos in ...

The extent and causes of illegal logging: an analysis of a major cause of tropical deforestation in Indonesia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
This paper considers the scale and underlying causes of recent high rates of deforestation in Indonesia. Its extent during 1997-98 is analysed using a materials balance model, the results of which demonstrate the seriousness of the problem at a time when

Structural and biochemical insights into the thermostable esterase Ta0887 from Thermoplasma acidophilum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, a novel esterase from the thermoacidophilic archaeon Thermoplasma acidophilum was biochemically and structurally characterized. Our results demonstrate that Ta0887 is a highly thermostable esterase that preferentially hydrolyzes p‐nitrophenyl hexanoate and possesses an α‐helical cap domain that likely contributes to its substrate ...

Combustion Behaviors, Kinetics, and Thermodynamics of Naturally Decomposed and Torrefied Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra) Forest Logging Residue

open access: yesEnergies
Torrefaction and combustion have been applied to naturally decomposed red oak logging residues. The results indicated that four-year natural decomposition would lower the energy density of red oak from 20.14 to 18.85 MJ/kg.
