Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Longitudinal Analysis of the effect of meteorological factors, allergens, and air pollution on respiratory condition in children [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In this report we explore how the effect of meteorological factors, allergens, and air pollution on respiratory conditions in children using longitudinal data. Our analysis makes use of a dataset from the DAVIS study in southern Ontario.

The analysis of longitudinal data using mixed model L-splines.

open access: yes, 2006
L-splines are a large family of smoothing splines defined in terms of a linear differential operator. This article develops L-splines within the context of linear mixed models and uses the resulting mixed model L-spline to analyze longitudinal data from ...

Models of the aging brain structure and individual decline

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroinformatics, 2012
The aging brain’s structural development constitutes a spatiotemporal process that is accessible by MR-based computational morphometry. Here we introduce basic concepts and analytical approaches to quantify age-related differences and changes in ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Longitudinal Analysis of Risk Factors and Outcomes in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: Stroke and Bleeding Events

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences
Background: “Atrial fibrillation (AF)” is a prevalent cardiac arrhythmia connected with augmented risk of stroke and bleeding events. Despite advancements in treatment strategies, managing AF remains challenging due to its multifactorial nature ...

Longitudinal analysis of residual feed intake and BW in mink using random regression with heterogeneous residual variance

open access: yesAnimal, 2015
The aim of this study was to determine the genetic background of longitudinal residual feed intake (RFI) and BW gain in farmed mink using random regression methods considering heterogeneous residual variances. The individual BW was measured every 3 weeks

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Design and Analysis of Longitudinal Studies [PDF]

open access: yesPsychiatric Annals, 2008
In this issue of Psychiatric Annals, we focus on topics that have arisen in the analysis of longitudinal data over the past 15 years that we as statisticians believe are important for the progress of medical research in general, and psychiatric research in particular.
