Longitudinal and Screw Vibrations of Beams

Nature, 1955
RAYLEIGH'S method has been applied recently by us to examine the modes of vibration of beams and the relationships between the modes. One result of some interest is the interference with the fundamental modes of two types of oscillation which we have called ‘screw vibrations’.

Longitudinal vibrations of a conical bar

Applied Scientific Research, 1963
The present paper considers longitudinal vibrations of a homogeneous truncated cone. This is probably one of the few cases relating to vibrating rods of variable cross-section, where it is possible to give an exact solution instead of using the well-known laborious approximate procedures.

Longitudinal Vibrations of a Drill String

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1965
When drilling an oil well with a rotary drill, the penetration rate often can be substantially increased by superimposing a vibratory motion on the rotating bit. In order to evaluate drilling methods that would include both rotary and vibratory action, a study has been made on the vibrational characteristics of long drill string. The resonant frequency
