Deadweight anchoring behavior for aquaculture longline

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2020
The similarity theory was used to study the behavior of five anchoring and one "rezon" type deadweight designs, using scale models. The surface sediments extracted from Charagato Bay, Cubagua Island, were characterized to evaluate the efficiency of these models on these substrates.

Effect of pelagic longline bait type on species selectivity: a global synthesis of evidence

open access: yesReviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries, 2020
Fisheries can profoundly affect bycatch species with ‘slow’ life history traits. Managing bait type offers one tool to control species selectivity. Different species and sizes of marine predators have different prey, and hence bait, preferences.

Bycatch mitigation of protected and threatened species in tuna purse seine and longline fisheries

open access: yesEndangered Species Research, 2020
Bycatch and mortality in fishing gear poses a conservation threat worldwide to many marine species. Resource managers and conservation scientists face challenges in identifying bycatch mitigation solutions that work for multiple taxa while maintaining ...

Global seabird bycatch in longline fisheries [PDF]

open access: yesEndangered Species Research, 2011
Bycatch in longline fisheries is believed to govern the adverse conservation status of many seabird species, but no comprehensive global assessment has been undertaken. We reviewed the extent of seabird bycatch in all longline fisheries for which data are available.

Increased production of green mussels ( Perna viridis ) using longline culture and an economic comparison with stake culture on the north coast of Java, Indonesia

open access: yesAquaculture Research, 2020
The effectiveness of green mussel (Perna viridis) cultivation was compared between longline culture and the traditional bamboo stake method using different mussel densities in a rural area on the north coast of Java, Indonesia.

The Effect of the Live Bait Type and Hook Size on the Catch Per Unit Effort and Catch Composition of Seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.,1758) in Longline Fisheries

open access: yesÇanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Journal of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, 2021
The main objective of the study, was to determine the effect of the live bait type and hook size on the catch per effort and catch composition of seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax (Linnaeus, 1758) in longline fisheries.

The black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo Lowe, 1839) fisheries from the Portuguese mainland and Madeira Island

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2009
For several decades, the black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo, Lowe 1839) has been a valuable resource for fishing communities in Madeira and more recently for those in mainland Portugal.

Shellfish relaying on longlines in the open sea: A note

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, 2023
Since bivalves are filter‐feeding organisms that can concentrate microorganisms and contaminants from the surrounding environment, there are strict sanitary requirements to ensure food safety.

Modal and empirical lengths at sexual maturity for six deep-sea species in Ecuadorian oceanic waters

open access: yesMarine and Fishery Sciences, 2023
The objective of the present work was to establish modal lengths, empirical lengths at sexual maturity, and proportions of mature individuals of six deep-sea species from the bycatch of the experimental fishery for Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus ...

Incidental capture of sea turtles by longlines in the Gulf of Gabès (South Tunisia): A comparative study between bottom and surface longlines

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2008
Longlines are a fishing gear that have traditionally been used world-wide. Surface longlines are mainly used to fish swordfish, albacore, tuna and some species of sharks, while bottom longlines are used to fish large bottom-dwelling fish such as groupers.
