Association between serum bicarbonate and low mid‐upper arm circumference in patients with non‐dialysis‐dependent chronic kidney disease: A cross‐sectional study

open access: yesNutrition in Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Although previous experimental studies showed that metabolic acidosis promoted muscle catabolism and impaired protein synthesis, few epidemiological studies reported an independent association between serum bicarbonate levels and muscle atrophy in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Combination of thiazide and loop diuretics for the treatment of acute heart failure

open access: yesCardiologia Hungarica
Acute heart failure (AHF) is a serious condition with a high mortality rate. It is considered as the most common cause of unplanned hospitalizations in the elderly population. In 90% of all cases AHF presents with congestive symptoms, thus mostly treated

Thiazide and loop diuretics.

open access: yesJournal of clinical hypertension (Greenwich, Conn.), 2012
KEY POINTS AND PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS: •  Although chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide are structurally similar, they are very different pharmacokinetically, with chlorthalidone having both an extremely long half-life (approximately 40 to 60 hours) and a large volume of distribution, with gradual elimination from the plasma compartment by tubular

Sodium chloride transport of normal and dietary enlarged rat cecum in vitro [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Sodium chloride transport across isolated cecum mucosa was investigated in normal rats and rats with adaptive cecum growth induced by dietary polyethylene glycol (PEG). The normal cecum absorbed CI in excess of Na with a small short-circuit current (Isc).

Using deep learning to assess the toxicological effects of sublethal exposure of a novel green pesticide in a stored‐product beetle

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
This study employs an AI‐driven multidisciplinary approach to increase our understanding of the toxicological effects of sublethal concentrations of carlina oxide on Prostephanus truncatus. Sublethal exposure to the carlina oxide induced changes in motor patterns and thigmotaxis, highlighting its potential role in integrated pest management strategies.

Can we improve the treatment of congestion in heart failure? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
INTRODUCTION: Dyspnoea and peripheral oedema, caused by fluid redistribution to the lungs and/or by fluid overload, are the main causes of hospitalization in patients with heart failure and are associated with poor outcomes.

Long‐term remission in gout: Challenges and future opportunities

open access: yesRheumatology &Autoimmunity, EarlyView.
Prolonged hyperuricemia is a major risk factor for gout, which is now regarded as a curable disease. Awareness of the various factors that can trigger gout flares is essential for their prevention. An important determinant of treatment decisions and long‐term follow‐up is the quality of the clinician–patient relationship. The “treat‐to‐target” approach

Cardiac disease in systemic sclerosis: Integrating pathobiology with clinical management

open access: yesRheumatology &Autoimmunity, EarlyView.
Abstract Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex autoimmune disorder in which cardiovascular involvement remains a major determinant of morbidity and mortality. Cardiac injury in SSc results from the interplay of microvascular dysfunction, immune‐mediated inflammation, and progressive interstitial and replacement fibrosis, leading to myocardial disease ...

Subcutaneous Furosemide Therapy for Chronic Management of Refractory Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs and Cats

open access: yesAnimals
Reduced efficacy of oral diuretics in the treatment of congestive heart failure (CHF) can be secondary to reduced enteral drug absorption. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of subcutaneous (SC) furosemide administration to control the ...
