Charting Income Inequality: The Lorenz Curve [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper explains how to build Lorenz Curves for income distributions and discusses their use for inequality measurement. A short conceptual background, a step-by-step procedure and a simple numerical example illustrate how to calculate and draw Lorenz

Estimating the Empirical Lorenz Curve and Gini Coefficient in the Presence of Error [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The Lorenz curve is a graphical tool that is widely used to characterize the concentration of a measure in a population, such as wealth. It is frequently the case that the measure of interest used to rank experimental units when estimating the empirical ...

Soliton dynamics for the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with magnetic field

open access: yes, 2009
The semiclassical limit of a nonlinear focusing Schr\"odinger equation in presence of nonconstant electric and magnetic potentials V,A is studied by taking as initial datum the ground state solution of an associated autonomous elliptic equation.

Is Public‐Private Partnership a Significant Factor when Achieving Horizontal Equity in Public Healthcare Resources in Spain?

open access: yesThe International Journal of Health Planning and Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Achieving horizontal equity in the access and use of public health resources is one of the main goals of the 17 Spanish regions. We analyse geographical inequities in the allocation of human and material resources for specialised care in Spanish hospitals, paying attention to the public‐private partnership.

Lorenz Curve Interpolation and the Gini Coefficient

open access: yesJournal of Income Distribution®, 2010
This article presents a simple non-polynomial spline that may be used to construct Lorenz curves from grouped data. The spline is naturally convex and works by determining a series of piecewise segments that may be joined to give a smooth and continuous Lorenz curve.

A Rapid In‐Field Soil Extraction Procedure to Measure Plant‐Available Soil P and K Using an ISFET Multi‐Sensor

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Knowledge of plant‐available soil nutrients is important for determining fertilizer requirements. Collecting this data rapidly and directly in the field could be beneficial for improving nutrient utilization efficiency. Aim Evaluation of the comparability of plant‐available soil phosphorus (Ppa) and potassium (Kpa) measurements with

Social Welfare Analysis of Income Distributions: Ranking Income Distributions with Lorenz Curves [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper illustrates how Lorenz Curves can be used to identify the best income distribution on social welfare grounds, within a set of alternative income distributions generated by different policy options.
