Characterizing compressibility with Lorenz curves [PDF]
This paper revisits earlier work on rate distortion behavior of sparse sources, namely it highlights the fact that a graphical sparsity characterization proposed in [1] is a Lorenz curve, a tool for summarizing income inequality that has been used by economists for over a century. The Lorenz curve associated to a memoryless source can be used to obtain

Dry–Hot Compound Events Driving the 2024 Pantanal Wildfires
Extreme wildfires in the Pantanal in 2024 were driven by a cascade of heatwaves, rainfall deficits and the absence of the annual flood pulse. These conditions dried soils and rivers, enhanced fuel accumulation and enabled early and intense fire outbreaks.

Analysis of inequality in fertility curves fitted by gamma distributions [PDF]
The aim of this paper is to analyse fertility curves from a novel viewpoint, that of inequality. Through sufficient conditions that can be easily verified, we compare inequality, in the Lorenz and Generalized Lorenz sense, in fertility curves fitted by ...

Spatiotemporal Changes in Precipitation Concentration in the Atlantic‐European Region
This study analyses changes in precipitation concentration using ERA5 and E‐OBS datasets. Gini index as a measure of precipitation concentration revealed a gradual expansion of areas with increasing unevenness in precipitation distribution across the Atlantic‐European region since 1961.

Sequential Comparisons of Generalized Lorenz Curves for Different Demographics [PDF]
Jenkins and Lambert (1993) and Chambaz and Maurin (1998) proposed extensions of the sequential generalized Lorenz dominance (SGL) criterion that was proposed by Atkinson and Bourguignon (1987): the extended version of SGL made it possible to compare ...

Sunshine Duration in Brazil From Meteosat (1983–2020): Climatology, Variability and Long‐Term Trends
Using nearly four decades of Meteosat satellite data (1983–2020), this study presents a country‐wide climatology of sunshine duration (SDU) in Brazil. The results reveal marked regional contrasts, dominant modes of variability, and significant long‐term trends, providing new information on the most relevant meteorological systems that influence SDU and

Ranking intersectiong Lorenz Curves. [PDF]
This paper is concerned with the problem of ranking Lorenz curves in situations where the Lorenz curves intersect and no unambiguous ranking can be attained witout introducing weaker ranking criteria than first-degree Lorenz dominance.
