Seedling and adult plant resistance to Pyricularia oryzae in Ethiopian rice cultivars

open access: yesActa Universitatis Sapientiae: Agriculture and Environment, 2020
Two separate experiments were done for seedling and adult resistance in rice varieties against blast. Each experiment consists of 20 varieties and is evaluated under artificial inoculation with blast.

Repeated low-level blast induces chronic neuroinflammation and neurobehavioral changes in rat models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Blast-induced neurotrauma (bTBI) is a signature medical concern for military personnel when they are exposed to explosions in active combat zones. However, soldiers as well as law enforcement personnel are also repeatedly exposed to low-level blasts ...

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Stakeholder-informed priorities for process improvement in Warfighter Brain Health efforts

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
IntroductionBlast overpressure exposure and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) remain important concerns within Warfighter Brain Health efforts, yet practical gaps persist in symptom recognition, education, and care navigation.MethodsAn anonymous web ...

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Investigating the use of rubber to attenuate the effect of blast load applied to a surrogate lower leg

open access: yes, 2008
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 191-197).Landmines are the epitome of the perfect soldier: always ready, never tiring. Landmines also do not choose their victims - it may very well be an armed and protected soldier or an ...

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Experimental validation of two CFD solvers for prediction of blast loading in an urban environment [Elektronisk resurs]

open access: yes, 2023
The evolution and propagation of a blast wave in urban environments differ substantially from those of free-field blast waves. The interaction of the blast wave with obstacles along its path gives rise to physical phenomena such as reflection ...

Effect of terahertz irradiation on DNA damage repair in living cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We investigated the effect of terahertz (THz) wave irradiation on DNA double‐strand break (DSB) repair in living cells. We found that THz irradiation enhanced DSB repair at specific frequencies, whereas heat treatment inhibited it, indicating that this effect is nonthermal and frequency‐specific.

Blast noise classification with common sound level meter metrics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A common set of signal features measurable by a basic sound level meter are analyzed, and the quality of information carried in subsets of these features are examined for their ability to discriminate military blast and non-blast sounds.
