Effect of Low Temperatures on Charpy Impact Toughness of Austempered Ductile Irons
Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, 2002Impact properties of standard American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) grades of austempered ductile iron (ADI) were evaluated at subzero temperatures in unnotched and V-notched conditions and compared with ferritic and pearlitic grades of ductile irons (DIs).

The impact toughness and mechanism of low-carbon steel fracture at low temperatures
Industrial laboratory. Diagnostics of materials, 2019The goal of the work is to study the effect of severe plastic deformation (SPD) on the impact toughness and fracture mechanism of St3sp low-carbon structural steel within a test temperature range of 293 – 213 K. The issues of deformation processing of steel St3sp billets using SPD method in conditions of the equal-channel angular pressing scheme (ECAP)

The effect of Mo content on impact toughness of the coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) in 420 MPa offshore engineering steels after 15 kJ/cm welding simulations is studied at low temperatures of −40, −60 and −80 °C. With increasing Mo content from 0.08 to 0.16 wt.%, the average size of the prior austenite grain in the CGHAZ is decreased from 150

Ultrafine ferrite with a grain size range of 0.5-2 μm was introduced into low-temperature bainitic medium-carbon high-silicon steel through partially austenitization of cold-rolled tempered troostite followed by austempering at temperatures of 10 °C above martensite starting temperature.

Enhanced Low-Temperature Impact Toughness of Ultra-Fine Grained SiCp/ZL108 Composites
Materials Science Forum, 2012A new strategy for increasing the low-temperature toughness of structural materials is in urgent need for overcoming the general rheotropic brittleness in coarse-grain state. Here, a unique phenomenon was observed that ultra-fine-grained (UFG) SiCp/ZL108 composites after severe plastic deformation (SPD) exhibit higher impact toughness at temperatures ...

Abstract An X80 (80 ksi, 555 MPa) pipeline steel was innovatively processed in the laboratory using the intercritical rolling process and excellent low temperature toughness was obtained. The Charpy v-notch impact energy was greater than 400 J at −80 °C and the shear fracture area in drop-weight tear test approached ~100% at −60 °C.
