1 km fog and low stratus detection using pan-sharpened MSG SEVIRI data [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2012
In this paper a new technique for the detection of fog and low stratus in 1 km resolution from MSG SEVIRI data is presented. The method relies on the pan-sharpening of 3 km narrow-band channels using the 1 km high-resolution visible (HRV) channel.

Fog and low-level stratus characteristics at the airport of Odesa from surface observations

open access: yesВісник Харківського національного університету імені В.Н. Каразіна. Серія Геологія. Географія. Екологія, 2023
Introduction. Fog that limits visibility and low-level stratus represent a significant hazard to aviation especially during takeoff and landing, and also low-level flying of aircrafts, because accidents often occur in reduced visibility conditions and ...

Machine Learning for Fog-and-Low-Stratus Nowcasting from Meteosat SEVIRI Satellite Images

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2023
Fog and low stratus (FLS) are meteorological phenomena that have a significant impact on all ways of transportation and public safety. Due to their similarity, they are often grouped together as a single category when viewed from a satellite perspective.

Harmonization of Meteosat First and Second Generation Datasets for Fog and Low Stratus Studies

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
Operational weather satellites, dating back to 1970s, currently provide the best basis for climatological investigations, such as an analysis of changes in the cloud cover.

Automatic Detection of Daytime Sea Fog Based on Supervised Classification Techniques for FY-3D Satellite

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
Polar-orbiting satellites have been widely used for detecting sea fog because of their wide coverage and high spatial and spectral resolution. FengYun-3D (FY-3D) is a Chinese satellite that provides global sea fog observation.

Quantifying Parametric Uncertainty Effects on Tropical Cloud Fraction in an AGCM

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2023
The underestimation of cloud fraction, especially the low stratus cloud (LSC) fraction over the eastern oceans, remains a problem in most atmospheric global climate models.

Enhanced Nighttime Fog and Low Stratus Occurrence Over the Landes Forest, France

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
AbstractUnderstanding the drivers of fog and low stratus (FLS) cloud occurrence is important for traffic, ecosystems, and climate models, but it is challenging to analyze due to the complex interactions between meteorological factors and land cover. Here, we use active and passive satellite data, as well as reanalysis data to investigate nighttime FLS ...

What controls the formation of nocturnal low-level stratus clouds over southern West Africa during the monsoon season? [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2019
Nocturnal low-level stratus clouds (LLCs) are frequently observed in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over southern West Africa (SWA) during the summer monsoon season.
