Thermohaline structure and circulation beneath the Langhovde Glacier ice shelf in East Antarctica

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Basal melting of ice shelves is the principal driver of recent ice mass loss in Antarctica. The study reports comprehensive structures of temperature, salinity and current under an ice shelf in East Antarctica obtained by borehole measurements.

Nonlinear two-level dynamics of quantum time crystals

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Recent work has reported a realization of a time crystal in the form of the Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons in superfluid 3He. Here, the authors study the dynamics of a pair of such quantum time crystals and show that it closely resembles the ...

Modelling the Radical Chemistry on Ice Surfaces: An Integrated Quantum Chemical and Experimental Approach

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2022
Heterogeneous radical processes on ice surfaces play a vital role in the formation of building blocks of the biologically relevant molecules in space. Therefore, quantitative mechanistic details of the radical binding and radical reactions on ices are ...

Antiferromagnets at Low Temperatures [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2011
The low-temperature properties of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet in 2+1 space-time dimensions are analyzed within the framework of effective Lagrangians. It is shown that the magnon-magnon interaction is very weak and repulsive, manifesting itself through a term proportional to five powers of the temperature in the pressure.

UV-Induced Formation of Ice XI Observed Using an Ultra-High Vacuum Cryogenic Transmission Electron Microscope and its Implications for Planetary Science

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemistry, 2021
The occurrence of hydrogen atom-ordered form of ice Ih, ice XI, in the outer Solar System has been discussed based on laboratory experiments because its ferroelectricity influences the physical processes in the outer Solar System.

On how the mechanochemical and co-precipitation synthesis method changes the sensitivity and operating range of the Ba2Mg1-xEuxWO6 optical thermometer

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
The suitability of Ba2MgWO6 (BMW) double perovskite doped with Eu3+ for the construction of an optical thermometer was tested. It has been shown that by controlling the conditions of BMW synthesis, the sensitivity of the optical thermometer and the ...

Low-Temperature Physics [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1948
THE great attraction of low temperature physics as a field of research is that so many of the phenomena still lack any fundamental theory, so that the outcome of any new experiment is rarely a foregone conclusion. The outstanding phenomena at present requiring something deeper than ‘phenomen-ologica theories are superconductivity and the properties of ...
