Risk Evaluation of the NCD Risk Calculator for Open Pancreaticoduodenectomy in Elderly Patients: A Validation Study

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This study investigated the utility of the Japanese NCD risk calculator for preoperative assessment in elderly patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), using a validation study design. In the training cohort, two preoperative factors—the predicted incidence of postoperative ADL decline ≥ 44.8% and Clavien–Dindo grade IV or higher complications

A Convolutional Approach to Vertebrae Detection and Labelling in Whole Spine MRI [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
We propose a novel convolutional method for the detection and identification of vertebrae in whole spine MRIs. This involves using a learnt vector field to group detected vertebrae corners together into individual vertebral bodies and convolutional image-to-image translation followed by beam search to label vertebral levels in a self-consistent manner.

A Soft Wearable Robot with an Adjustable Twisted String Actuator and a Two‐Stage Transmission Mechanism for Manual Handling Tasks

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article proposes a soft wearable robot (WeaRo) to assist workers while executing manual handling tasks. With its innovative design, the WeaRo effectively assists multiple body parts during manual handling tasks while using a single motor. Furthermore, the components of the WeaRo are assembled onto a fabric‐based suit, ensuring high performance and

Automatic Lumbar Spinal CT Image Segmentation with a Dual Densely Connected U-Net [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
The clinical treatment of degenerative and developmental lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is different. Computed tomography (CT) is helpful in distinguishing degenerative and developmental LSS due to its advantage in imaging of osseous and calcified tissues. However, boundaries of the vertebral body, spinal canal and dural sac have low contrast and hard to
