Exploring Thermal Environmental Considerations for Designing Lunar Habitats on the Lunar South Pole

55th International Conference on Environmental Systems
Exploring the thermal conditions of proposed conceptual habitats at the Lunar south pole is crucial to achieving sustainable human habitation on the Lunar surface, in line with the progress of NASA’s Artemis Mission. This paper presents a mathematical modeling framework to simulate the interior temperature in habitats constructed with Lunar regolith ...

A concept for a simple radio observatory at the lunar south pole

Advances in Space Research, 2003
Abstract The lunar south pole may be the most feasible site for the first very low frequency interferometric array. The part of the electromagnetic spectrum below ∼30 MHz remains to be the only unexplored window in astronomy because of significant radio interference of Earth.

Lack of Exposed Ice Inside Lunar South Pole Shackleton Crater

Science, 2008
The inside of Shackleton Crater at the lunar south pole is permanently shadowed; it has been inferred to hold water-ice deposits. The Terrain Camera (TC), a 10-meter-resolution stereo camera onboard the Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE) spacecraft, succeeded in imaging the inside of the crater, which was faintly lit by sunlight scattered ...

Effects of the South Pole-Aitken Magnetic Anomaly Cluster on the Plasma Environment at the Lunar South Pole

Despite lacking a global magnetic field, the Moon features localized magnetized regions called lunar magnetic anomalies [1]. Their interaction with the solar wind results in significant proton reflection and deflection [2], creating unique structures often referred to as lunar mini-magnetospheres [3, 4].

Magnetic Anomalies Near the Lunar South Pole and Their Consequences

We report improved mapping of crustal magnetic anomalies near the lunar poles using a combination of Lunar Prospector and Kaguya orbital magnetometer data.  In agreement with previous results, a concentration of moderately strong magnetic anomalies is centered approximately on the south polar region.

The Lunar South Pole-Aitken Basin Region: A New Geological Map

Introduction:  The lunar South Pole-Aitken basin (SPA) is of special interest for human and robotic missions for the near future [e.g. 1–4]. This makes detailed studies of the geological background and setting of the region a high priority. Located on the lunar farside, centered at ~53° S, 191°&
