Exploring Use‐Wear Texture Quantification Through Confocal Microscopy on Tools Made From Volcanic Rocks (Basalt and Phonolite)

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Functional analysis is essential for reconstructing lithic tool use. Recent approaches combining confocal microscopy and surface texture analysis provide quantitative alternatives to traditional visual use‐wear analysis, although their application to coarse‐grained, heterogeneous rocks remains challenging because of their complex surface ...

Morphological Associations between the Distal Radioulnar Joint and the Lunate

open access: yes, 2017
Background Variations in morphology of the carpal bones have been described. Their implication in wrist disease and specific kinematic features has been recognized, and a better knowledge of these variations is essential ...

Story2Board: A Training‐Free Approach for Expressive Visual Storytelling

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract We present Story2Board, a training‐free framework for expressive storyboard generation from natural language. Existing methods narrowly focus on subject identity, overlooking key aspects of visual storytelling such as spatial composition, background evolution, and narrative pacing.

Equine vegetative endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis due to refractory Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was the causative agent of vegetative endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis in a 24‐year‐old Irish draught gelding that presented with prolonged history of intermittent pyrexia and tachycardia. Clinical investigations revealed persistently reduced neck mobility, tachydysrhythmia and episodic pyrexia up to 41°C ...

Anatomic Variation in Volar Tilt of the Scaphoid and Lunate Facet of the Distal Radius

open access: yes, 2016
Purpose The aim of distal radial fracture treatment is to achieve optimal function through the restoration of normal anatomy, including volar tilt. The accuracy of assessing volar tilt on standard lateral radiographs compared with anatomic tilt lateral ...

Arsenite methyltransferase 3 is required for mitochondrial function and hepatic lipid metabolism

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
AS3MT is a protein that helps the body process arsenic, a naturally occurring toxin found in water and soil. We discovered it also helps cells make and use energy properly. Without AS3MT, cells' mitochondria do not work well, leading to fatty liver and reduced activity. Increasing AS3MT in liver cells restores energy and protects against arsenic damage,

Giants in the cold: Morphological evidence for vascular heat retention in the viscera but not the skeletal muscle of the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Fewer than 50 of the over 30,000 extant species of fishes have developed anatomical specializations facilitating endothermy in specific body regions. The plankton‐feeding basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), traditionally classified as an ectotherm, was recently shown to have regionally endothermic traits such as centralized red muscle (RM ...

A bristle‐nosed Jurassic ray‐finned fish (Actinopterygii) bears true dermal odontodes on its snout

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Teeth show extreme diversity, including tooth‐like dermal odontodes or “skin teeth” in many extant fishes. We describe the anatomy of enlarged tubercles on the snout of Redfieldius, an extinct early Jurassic fish. We found that the tubercles in Redfieldius are dermal odontodes that evolved independently from those of living species. Abstract Comparison
