Lymphatic function is required prenatally for lung inflation at birth [PDF]
Mammals must inflate their lungs and breathe within minutes of birth to survive. A key regulator of neonatal lung inflation is pulmonary surfactant, a lipoprotein complex which increases lung compliance by reducing alveolar surface tension (Morgan, 1971)

Endothelial toll-like receptor 4 maintains lung integrity via epigenetic suppression of p16INK4a. [PDF]
We previously reported that the canonical innate immune receptor toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is critical in maintaining lung integrity. However, the molecular mechanisms via which TLR4 mediates its effect remained unclear.

Effect of hypothermia on lung compliance [PDF]
The changes in pulmonary compliance have been studied under conditions of total body hypothermia. Five groups of sheep were used; two groups were controls—one for the effects of anaesthesia and the other for normothermic biventricular bypass. The third group was cooled using a femoro-femoral arterio-venous shunt to 20°-23° C.

Prone position: Does it help with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)? [PDF]
Introduction: Lung protective ventilation therapy with low tidal volume-high PEEP is the standard treatment for the patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Deletion of vitamin D receptor leads to premature emphysema/COPD by increased matrix metalloproteinases and lymphoid aggregates formation [PDF]
Deficiency of vitamin D is associated with accelerated decline in lung function. Vitamin D is a ligand for nuclear hormone vitamin D receptor (VDR), and upon binding it modulates various cellular functions.

Trajectories of hypoxemia and pulmonary mechanics of COVID-19 ARDS in the NorthCARDS dataset
Background Understanding heterogeneity seen in patients with COVIDARDS and comparing to non-COVIDARDS may inform tailored treatments. Methods A multidisciplinary team of frontline clinicians and data scientists worked to create the Northwell COVIDARDS ...

Goal: Alveolar compliance is a main determinant of lung airflow. The compliance of the alveoli is a function of their tissue fiber elasticity, fiber volume, and surface tension.

Patterns of recruitment and injury in a heterogeneous airway network model [PDF]
In respiratory distress, lung airways become flooded with liquid and may collapse due to surface-tension forces acting on air-liquid interfaces, inhibiting gas exchange.
