Natural ventilation for the prevention of airborne contagion. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
BACKGROUND: Institutional transmission of airborne infections such as tuberculosis (TB) is an important public health problem, especially in resource-limited settings where protective measures such as negative-pressure isolation rooms are difficult to ...

Membrane‐Active Peptide Protects Against Inflammation by Targeting NLRP3 Activation at the Trans‐Golgi Network

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The membrane‐active peptide Pep19‐2.5 reduces harmful inflammation by blocking activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome at trans‐Golgi network membranes. By targeting key membrane interactions, Pep19‐2.5 suppresses inflammatory IL‐1β production and alleviates allergic airway inflammation in mice, leading to reduced immune cell infiltration and improved ...

Size matters: An observational study investigating estimated height as a reference size for calculating tidal volumes if low tidal volume ventilation is required.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
PurposeAcute lung injury is a life threatening condition often requiring mechanical ventilation. Lung-protective ventilation with tidal volumes of 6 mL/kg predicted body weight (PBW, calculated on the basis of a patient's sex and height), is part of ...

Pyrazole‐Derived Antibacterial Compounds Effectively Treat Methicillin‐Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Infections by Inhibiting Aspartate Transcarbamoylase

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study unveils a novel antibacterial mechanism against MRSA, in which the compound Py‐27 selectively targets and inhibits aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase), a key enzyme in pyrimidine synthesis. This inhibition disrupts DNA replication, induces oxidative damage, leading to potent bactericidal activity.

Lung-Protective Ventilation Over 6 Years at a Large Academic Medical Center: An Evaluation of Trends, Adherence, and Perceptions of Benefit

open access: yesCritical Care Explorations, 2021
Objectives:. The main objective of this study was to evaluate trends in set tidal volumes across all adult ICUs at a large academic medical center over 6 years, with a focus on adherence to lung-protective ventilation (≤ 8-cc/kg ideal body weight).

Interpretation and use of intraoperative protective ventilation parameters: a scoping review

open access: yes, 2022
Thirty years ago, the traditional approach to mechanical ventilation consisted of the normalization of PaCO2 and pH at the expense of using a tidal volume (VT) of 10–15 mL kg-1.

Stress Hyperglycemia Drives CD4+ T Cell PANoptosis and Postoperative Organ Injury via Monocyte‐Derived Succinate

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
High glucose is linked to reduced succinate dehydrogenase activity in CD14+ monocytes, accompanied by succinate accumulation and extracellular release. Extracellular succinate exacerbates mitochondrial ROS production and mtDNA release in CD4+ T cells. Cytosolic mtDNA then activates Z‐DNA binding protein 1 (ZBP1) and engages ZBP1‐associated inflammatory

Intrasplenic Thymus Organogenesis from Injectable Tissue Fragments Restores Functional T‐Cell Immunity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Clinical intramuscular thymus transplantation yields only short‐lived efficacy and marginal therapeutic benefits. Benefiting from the spleen's intrinsic strengths—rapid vascular perfusion, abundant developmental factors, and resident progenitors—the intrasplenic thymic grafts achieve robust thymic regeneration and substantial T‐cell reconstitution ...

Protective Mechanical Ventilation Modes İn The ICU: Contemporary Approaches, Clinical Applications and Their Association With Infections

open access: yesCurrent Research in Health Sciences
In patients with respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation is the most basic treatment for intensive care patients. This treatment management is indispensable to ensure normal oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.

Combined lung and brain ultrasonography for an individualized “brain-protective ventilation strategy” in neurocritical care patients with challenging ventilation needs

open access: yesCritical Ultrasound Journal, 2018
When intracranial hypertension and severe lung damage coexist in the same clinical scenario, their management poses a difficult challenge, especially as concerns mechanical ventilation management.
