Extracorporeal support for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Review, 2014
Extracorporeal membrane oxygen (ECMO) has been used for many years in patients with life-threatening hypoxaemia and/or hypercarbia. While early trials demonstrated that it was associated with poor outcomes and extensive haemorrhage, the technique has ...

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.

Protective mechanical ventilation in the anesthetic management of gynecological robot-assisted operations (literature review)

open access: yesВестник анестезиологии и реаниматологии
The objective was to elucidate the modern concept of protective lung ventilation, particularly during laparoscopic operations involving carbondioxide pneumoperitoneum and Trendelenburg position based on the literature analysis.Results.

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Acute lung injury and the acute respiratory distress syndrome in the injured patient

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine, 2012
Acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome are clinical entities of multi-factorial origin frequently seen in traumatically injured patients requiring intensive care.

Wearable Smart Patches on Sustainable Chitosan With Reversible Microbial Growth‐Inhibitory Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Chitosan, a polysaccharide upcycled from biowaste, has long promised sustainable, biocompatible, and antimicrobial films and devices, an appeal reinforced by its recent regulatory recognition, with several chitosan‐based antibacterial dressings gaining clearance through the Food and Drug Administration's 510(k) pathway.

Expert perspectives on ECCO2R for acute hypoxemic respiratory failure: consensus of a 2022 European roundtable meeting

open access: yesAnnals of Intensive Care
Background By controlling hypercapnia, respiratory acidosis, and associated consequences, extracorporeal CO2 removal (ECCO2R) has the potential to facilitate ultra-protective lung ventilation (UPLV) strategies and to decrease injury from mechanical ...

A Holistic Platform Approach for Developing Robust Pulmonary mRNA Delivery: Integrating Novel Phenolic Acid‐Derived Ionizable Lipids and Device Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An integrated pulmonary mRNA delivery platform combining novel biodegradable syringic acid‐derived ionizable lipids, design‐of‐experiments formulation optimization, and vibrating‐mesh nebulizer engineering enabled stable aerosolization and efficient lung delivery.

Ultraprotective versus apneic ventilation in acute respiratory distress syndrome patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a physiological study

open access: yesJournal of Intensive Care, 2022
Background Even an ultraprotective ventilation strategy in severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) might induce ventilator-induced lung injury and apneic ventilation with the sole

Superimposed high-frequency jet ventilation combined with continuous positive airway pressure/assisted spontaneous breathing improves oxygenation in patients with H1N1-associated ARDS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Numerous cases of swine-origin 2009 H1N1 influenza A virus (H1N1)-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) bridged by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy have been reported; however, complication rates are high. We
