Organic solvents are commonly used to extract lutein. However, they are toxic and are not environmental-friendly. There are only a few reports on the quantification of lutein. Therefore, this study aimed to determine a suitable extraction method by which

Macular lutein and zeaxanthin are related to brain lutein and zeaxanthin in primates [PDF]
Xanthophyll pigments lutein and zeaxanthin cross the blood-retina barrier to preferentially accumulate in the macular region of the neural retina. There they form macular pigment, protecting the retina from blue light damage and oxidative stress. Lutein and zeaxanthin also accumulate in brain tissue.

Gac fruit's high carotenoid content, especially in the aril, makes it an excellent natural red pigment source for food applications, offering a safer alternative to synthetic dyes. Ethanol extraction achieved the highest overall pigment recovery (89.53%), whereas ethyl lactate extraction yielded the highest levels of total carotenoids, β‐carotene ...

Lutein and cognition in children [PDF]
In a recent paper Mulder et al.(,1) analysed the relationship between measurements of cognition and dietary and plasma lutein levels in children. Mulder et al.'s correlational study was based on previous observations that lutein is found in the brain(,2) and has been linked to cognition and central nervous system function in adults(,3). Unlike previous

Plasma kinetics of lutein, zeaxanthin, and 3-dehydro-lutein after multiple oral doses of a lutein supplement [PDF]
Adequate intake of lutein is postulated to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, but kinetic information for developing a dosing regimen is sparse. The objective was to characterize lutein plasma kinetics in a multiple dosing design and to assess the effects of lutein intake on concentrations of other plasma carotenoids. After a run-in ...

Abstract Polyphenolic compounds have attracted increasing market demand and extensive attention due to their potential health benefits and bioactivities. Meanwhile, proteins are widely used in the food industry for their nutritional and functional properties. However, the application of proteins in the food industry is often limited by challenges, such
