Far-infrared maps and multifrequency photometry are presented for M51 and its companion galaxy NGC 5195. Dust reradiates about half the starlight of the M51 + NGC 5195 system to produce the observed far-infrared (80-200 microns) luminosity of 3 x 10 to the 10th solar luminosities.

Detection of Deuterated Hydrocarbon Nanoparticles in the Whirlpool Galaxy, M51
Deuteration of hydrocarbon material, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), has been proposed to account for the low gas-phase abundances of D in the interstellar medium (ISM). JWST spectra of four star-forming regions in M51 show an emission

Basic Tools for Studies on the Formation and Disruption of Star Clusters: the Luminosity Function
The luminosity function (LF) of young star clusters is often approximated by a power law function. For clusters in a wide range of galactic environments this has resulted in fit indices near -2, but on average slightly steeper.

CO Isotopologue-derived Molecular Gas Conditions and CO-to-H2 Conversion Factors in M51
Over the past decade, several millimeter interferometer programs have mapped the nearby star-forming galaxy M51 at a spatial resolution of ≤170 pc. This study combines observations from three major programs: the PdBI Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey, the SMA ...
