Macro X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) scanning of illuminated manuscript fragments: potentialities and challenges

Microchemical Journal, 2016
Abstract Macro X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF) is gradually becoming an established technique for the non-invasive analytical investigation of painted surfaces. This paper discusses some of the benefits and limitations of employing MA-XRF for the study of manuscript illuminations.

Modigliani's studio practice revealed by MA‐XRF and non‐invasive spectral imaging techniques

X-Ray Spectrometry, 2020
Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) is an artist highly valued by the public. However, his works have been little studied by natural scientists. The project “Modigliani and His Secrets” follows two closely correlated purposes: a better knowledge of the materiality of the works and a better understanding of the studio practice of the artist.

Characterisation of ancient Roman wall‐painting fragments using non‐destructive IBA and MA‐XRF techniques

X-Ray Spectrometry, 2020
Scientific investigation is very important in studies addressing issues of archaeological and historical objects. Ion beam analysis (IBA) and macro X‐ray fluorescence (MA‐XRF) spectroscopy are remarkable tools to obtain information about elemental composition and imaging of historical artefacts with a non‐invasive character.

Testing gold leaves thickness calculations accuracy through Monte Carlo simulations and MA-XRF scanning

MA-XRF scanning in Conservation, Art and Archeology (MA-XRF), 2019
The use of X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) scanning systems has become a common practice in many application sectors. In multi-stratified and inhomogeneous samples, the surface response is not reliable, so different spectral analysis techniques have been proposed to highlight the presence of surface stratification.

Chemical imaging of stained-glass windows by means of macro X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) scanning

Microchemical Journal, 2016
Abstract Since the recent development of a mobile setup, MA-XRF scanning proved a valuable tool for the non-invasive, technical study of paintings. In this work, the applicability of MA-XRF scanning for investigating stained-glass windows inside a conservation studio is assessed by analysis of a high-profile, well-studied late-mediaeval panel ...

Pigments and Brush Strokes: Investigating the Painting Techniques Using MA-XRF and Laser Profilometry

To enhance the deep understanding of artists’mindset and technical practices the detailed characterization of paintings require the net of brushstrokes on the surface to be considered as informative. Laser profilometry is being coupled with a macro x-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) device as a non-destructive, non-invasive, portable tool for such an ...

Technical Investigation of The Paston Treasure by Macro-X-Ray Fluorescence (MA-XRF) Analysis

2016
The Paston Treasure, a spectacular painting from the 1660s now held at Norwich Castle Museum, depicts a wealth of objects from the collection of a local landed family. This deeply researched volume uses the paint-ing as a portal to the history of the collection, exploring the objects, their context, and the wider world they occupied.
