Further meta-evaluation of machine translation [PDF]
This paper analyzes the translation quality of machine translation systems for 10 language pairs translating between Czech, English, French, German, Hungarian, and Spanish. We report the translation quality of over 30 diverse translation systems based on a large-scale manual evaluation involving hundreds of hours of effort.

Evaluating Gender Bias in Machine Translation [PDF]
We present the first challenge set and evaluation protocol for the analysis of gender bias in machine translation (MT). Our approach uses two recent coreference resolution datasets composed of English sentences which cast participants into non-stereotypical gender roles (e.g., "The doctor asked the nurse to help her in the operation").

Labelled dependencies in machine translation evaluation [PDF]
We present a method for evaluating the quality of Machine Translation (MT) output, using labelled dependencies produced by a Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) parser. Our dependency-based method, in contrast to most popular string-based evaluation metrics, does not unfairly penalize perfectly valid syntactic variations in the translation, and the ...

Quiz-Based Evaluation of Machine Translation [PDF]
Quiz-Based Evaluation of Machine Translation This paper proposes a new method of manual evaluation for statistical machine translation, the so-called quiz-based evaluation, estimating whether people are able to extract information from machine-translated texts reliably.

Rethinking Round-Trip Translation for Machine Translation Evaluation
Automatic evaluation on low-resource language translation suffers from a deficiency of parallel corpora. Round-trip translation could be served as a clever and straightforward technique to alleviate the requirement of the parallel evaluation corpus. However, there was an observation of obscure correlations between the evaluation scores by forward and ...
