Planctomycetes and macroalgae, a striking association [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2014
Planctomycetes are part of the complex microbial biofilm community of a wide range of macroalgae. Recently, some studies began to unveil the great diversity of Planctomycetes present in this microenvironment and the interactions between the two organisms. Culture dependent and independent methods revealed the existence of a great number of species but,

Reconsidering the role of introduced species in the climate‐affected and highly invaded eastern Mediterranean

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Bioinvasions are considered mostly as a biodiversity and conservation hazard, but in specific situations, introduced species can bring ecological or socioeconomic benefits. We assessed the social–ecological role of marine introduced species in the eastern Mediterranean Sea—a global hotspot of bioinvasions and extirpations—and their potential ...

Solenostomus snuffleupagus sp. nov., a hairy ghost pipefish (Teleostei: Solenostomidae) from the Southwest Pacific, with an integrative comparison to S. paegnius

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract A new species of ghost pipefish, Solenostomus snuffleupagus sp. nov., is described from the Coral Sea based on specimens (18–34 mm SL) collected from coral reef habitats in Queensland, Australia. The species is diagnosed by the following combination of characters: abundant elongate integumentary filaments imparting a conspicuously shaggy ...

The effect of trait choice on hybrid species distribution model projections under climate change

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 6, June 2026.
Species distribution models (SDMs) have been increasingly combined with thermal performance data to enhance their transferability and to provide a physiological explanation for the predicted geographic patterns. Yet, while it is widely acknowledged that thermal sensitivities may vary among biological traits, it remains largely unexplored to what extent

Antimicrobial activity of Iberian macroalgae

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2007
The antibacterial and antifungal activity of 82 marine macroalgae (18 Chlorophyceae, 25 Phaeophyceae and 39 Rhodophyceae) was studied to evaluate their potential for being used as natural preservatives in the cosmetic industry. The bioactivity was analysed from crude extracts of fresh and lyophilised samples against three Gram-positive bacteria ...

Reef fish assemblages impacted by sponges overgrowing corals

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Numerous stressors are driving long‐term declines in coral cover on coral reefs, significantly impacting reef fish biodiversity and community structure. The benthic space made available by declining coral cover is often occupied by increases in other organisms, including macroalgae, encrusting ascidians, and sponges.

Macroalgae and macrozoobenthos of the Pcinja river

open access: yesArchives of Biological Sciences, 2003
During autumn and spring periods of 1998, 1999 and 2000, 4 taxa of macroalgae (divisions of Cyanophyta, Rhodophyta, Chrysophyta and Chlorophyta) and 78 taxa of macrozoobenthos were found in 10 localities of Pcinja River, in a part of its watercourse through Serbia. Macroalga Cladophora glomerata was the most numerous among representatives.
