In the ciliate Euplotes raikovi, a 631-amino acid Er-MAPK1 protein kinase was found to localize in nucleoli of the transcriptionally active nucleus (macronucleus) and act as a key component of an autocrine, cell-growth promoting self-signaling mechanism.

Site-Specific Methylation of Adenine in the Nuclear Genome of a Eucaryote, \u3cem\u3eTetrahymena thermophila\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]
DNA in the polyploid macronucleus of the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila contains the modified base N6-methyladenine. We identified two GATC sites which are methylated in most or all of the 45 copies of the macronuclear genome.

Small‐RNA‐guided histone modifications and somatic genome elimination in ciliates
In ciliates, an ancestral pathway for transposable element repression by small RNAs and histone methyltransferases has evolved into a highly orchestrated process to eliminate unwanted sequences from the genome. Abstract Transposable elements and other repeats are repressed by small‐RNA‐guided histone modifications in fungi, plants and animals.

\u3cem\u3eASI1\u3c/em\u3e, a Gene Encoding a Novel Leucine Zipper Protein, Is Induced during Development of the Macronucleus in \u3cem\u3eTetrahymena\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]
Sexual reproduction in the ciliate Tetrahymena follows a complex developmental program involving the sequential regulation of dozens of genes. Genes that are up-regulated during post-zygotic development in Tetrahymena were isolated by subtractive ...

Germ Line-Specific DNA Sequences are Present on All Five Micronuclear Chromosomes in \u3cem\u3eTetrahymena thermophila\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]
The development of the macronucleus from the zygotic micronucleus in the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena spp. involves the elimination of specific DNA sequences (M. C. Yao and M. Gorovsky, Chromosoma 48:1-18 1974).

Russian Doll Genes and Complex Chromosome Rearrangements in Oxytricha trifallax
Ciliates have two different types of nuclei per cell, with one acting as a somatic, transcriptionally active nucleus (macronucleus; abbr. MAC) and another serving as a germline nucleus (micronucleus; abbr. MIC). Furthermore, Oxytricha trifallax undergoes

Methylation of Replicating and Nonreplicating DNA in the Ciliate \u3cem\u3eTetrahymena thermophila\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]
Methylation of adenine in replicating and nonreplicating DNA of the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila was examined. In growing cells, 87% of the methylation occurred on the newly replicated daughter strand, but methylation was also detectable on the ...

An overview of Suctorian ciliates (Ciliophora, Suctorea) as epibionts of halacarid mites (Acari, Halacaridae) [PDF]
Scant information is available regarding the prevalence and distribution of suctorian ciliates on halacarid mites. However, using this limited information and data from our laboratory on the systematics, biology, ecology and distribution of suctorian ...
