Severe Macular Edema in Patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis-Related Uveitis

open access: yesCase Reports in Ophthalmological Medicine, 2013
Purpose. To report the onset of severe macular edema in adolescent female patients affected by juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Methods. Four female patients affected by JIA-related chronic anterior uveitis (CAU), complicated by severe macular edema,

An eye on long‐duration spaceflight: Controversies, countermeasures and challenges

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Space flight‐associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS) is a consequence of long‐duration space flight and is detected in two‐thirds of astronauts. In‐flight, this can cause a change in the refraction of the eyes, requiring graded hypermetropic ‘superfocus adjustable’ glasses, optic nerve head oedema and choroidal folds.

Branch retinal artery occlusion due to patent foramen ovale in a teenager

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract This report demonstrates the diagnostic evaluation and clinical management of a 16‐year‐old girl who developed branch retinal artery occlusion secondary to patent foramen ovale. The goal is to increase awareness of this rare presentation in adolescents among clinicians, with a summary of the important clinical features, multimodal imaging ...

Clinical and computed tomography findings of fatal poxviral vasculitis in a domestic shorthair cat

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 2, May 2026.
Abstract This report describes the clinical presentation, haematological abnormalities and imaging findings of systemic poxvirus infection in a cat that resulted in widespread severe dermal oedema and systemic inflammatory response syndrome. The cat lacked cutaneous lesions before the onset of dermal oedema, but developed crusting skin lesions and a ...

Decellularized Aged Bruch's Membrane Confers Unique Biochemical Cues to Retinal Pigment Epithelium for In Vitro Modeling of Age‐Related Macular Degeneration

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 5, May 2026.
A Bruchs membrane (BrM) mimic based on aged decellularized BrM was developed and differentially expressed proteins in aged dECM‐BrM that may provide specific biochemical cues fundamental to model AMD in vitro were identified. RPE culture on aged dECM‐BrM developed certain AMD‐like features including reduced TEER and expression of drusen components ...

Customizing AI‐based screening with real‐world data: Practical insights from diabetic retinopathy

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, Volume 104, Issue 3, Page 323-332, May 2026.
Abstract Purpose Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision loss in middle‐aged adults globally. Although artificial intelligence (AI)‐based screening tools like IDx‐DR (classification) and Thirona RetCAD (regression) have shown high sensitivity in controlled settings, real‐world screening faces challenges due to missing or low‐quality ...

Characterising PRPF31‐associated retinal dystrophy: Clinical insights from baseline data in a natural history study

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, Volume 104, Issue 3, Page e317-e328, May 2026.
Abstract Purpose To characterise the baseline clinical features and genotypes of adults with pre‐mRNA processing factor 31 (PRPF31)‐associated retinal dystrophy (RD) enrolled in a prospective, multicentre 4‐year natural history study, and to explore correlations between selected baseline parameters.
