The influence of position in overlap joints of Mg and Al alloys on microstructure and hardness of laser welds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Structure and properties of laser beam welding zone of dissimilar materials, AZ31 magnesium alloy and A5754 Aluminum alloy, are investigated. The microstructure and quality of the Mg/Al weld were studied by metallography, microhardness and optical ...

Microstructures and mechanical properties of titanium-reinforced magnesium matrix composites: Review and perspective

open access: yesJournal of Magnesium and Alloys, 2022
Currently, many gratifying signs of progress have been made in magnesium (Mg) matrix composites (MMCs) by virtue of their high mechanical properties both at room and elevated temperatures.

Research Progress and the Prospect of Damping Magnesium Alloys. [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials (Basel)
As the lightest structural metal material, magnesium alloys possess good casting properties, high electrical and thermal conductivity, high electromagnetic shielding, and excellent damping properties.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Microstructural and technological optimisation of magnesium alloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Magnesium is one of the most abundance element in nature, and it's characterised by a lower density than aluminium. These characteristics confer great potential to magnesium alloys, which are so used for specialised applications, like for military ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Solidification behaviour of magnesium alloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Magnesium alloys have been extensively used for structural and functional applications due to their low densities.

Preparation of functional coating on magnesium alloy with hydrophilic polymers and bioactive peptides for improved corrosion resistance and biocompatibility

open access: yesJournal of Magnesium and Alloys, 2022
Biodegradable magnesium alloy stents (MAS) have great potential in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, too fast degradation and the poor biocompatibility are still two key problems for the clinical utility of MAS.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Magnesium Alloys for use as an Intraluminal Tracheal Stent [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Tracheal stenting is used for successful management of adult airway obstructions, including tracheal stenosis, a narrowing of the tracheal lumen due to trauma or prolonged intubation.
