Structure of magnetospheric current systems and mapping of high latitude magnetospheric regions to the ionosphere

Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2018
Abstract The structures of the main magnetospheric current systems are interesting to researchers because of their key role in magnetospheric physics, including the generation of geomagnetic storms and substorms. Ring current and tail current are usually considered as main sources of geomagnetic activity.

A new magnetosphere-ionosphere current system on Mars

2023
Using magnetic field data collected by Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN), we investigated the external magnetic field distribution over low crustal field regions in the Martian ionosphere. Both draping and looping magnetic field are observed in the Martian dayside and nightside ionosphere at attitude range 150-600 altitude.

Current Systems in Planetary Magnetospheres and Ionospheres

Space Science Reviews, 2010
The interaction of planets with the solar wind produces a diversity of current systems, yet these can be classified into only a few different types, which include ionospheric currents, currents carried by magnetospheric boundaries like the magnetopause or ionopause, magnetotail currents, and currents flowing inside the magnetospheres, like ring ...

Magnetospheric current systems during stormtime sawtooth events

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2006
The sawtooth event period embedded in a storm interval on 2001‐10‐22 is analyzed using magnetic field modeling techniques. The model current systems show that sawtooth injections are associated with strong stretching of both the nightside and dusk‐sector magnetic field prior to the injection and a partial disruption of that current at the time of the ...

The global current systems of the Martian induced magnetosphere

Nature Astronomy, 2020
Induced magnetospheres form around conductive non-magnetized planetary objects (such as the ionospheres of Mars, Venus, Titan, Pluto and comets) in the electrodynamic interaction with a magnetized flowing plasma, such as the solar wind. The resulting induced currents couple the ionosphere and the deflected plasma, thus they provide insight into the ...
