Global current systems in Jupiter’s polar magnetosphere

2020
<p>The Juno spacecraft has been in polar orbit around Jupiter since July 4, 2016 sampling Jupiter's environment from ~1.05 Jovian radii outwards, extending to the distant reaches of the Jovian magnetosphere. Juno’s polar orbit makes it possible to acquire direct observations of the Jovian magnetosphere and auroral ...

Magnetostatic equilibrium and current systems in the Earth’s magnetosphere

Advances in Space Research, 2004
Abstract Experimental observations of the plasma pressure distribution in the magnetosphere including the latest data from INTERBALL/Tail probe are summarized. Generation of transverse and field-aligned currents due to the magnetospheric plasma pressure gradients is analyzed.

Dynamics of magnetospheric current systems during magnetic storms of different intensity

Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, 2006
The dynamics of the magnetospheric magnetic field during the magnetic storms of different intensity has been studied. The magnetic field variations on the Earth’s surface were calculated using the paraboloid model of the magnetosphere, taking into account the induction currents flowing in the diamagnetically conductive Earth.

The development of three-dimensional current system during a magnetospheric substorm

Planetary and Space Science, 1974
Abstract It is suggested that the pattern of three-dimensional substorm current circuit varies significantly even during the lifetime of a single substorm. This gives rise to quite complex time variations of the magnetic field at low latitude stations even for relatively isolated substorms.

A Model Current System for the Magnetospheric Substorm

1970
A model three dimensional current system for the magnetospheric substorm is proposed to account for the distribution of geomagnetic disturbance field vectors on the earth’s surface and for the distribution of auroral electrons and protons at the ionospheric level and in the equatorial plane.

Geometry of the magnetospheric tail and auroral current systems

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1965
Measurements of the earth's magnetic field in the magnetospheric tail by Explorer 10 [Heppner et al., 1963], Explorer 14 [Cahill, 1964], and particularly by Imp 1 [Ness, 1965] show that the polar field lines are swept back into a magnetospheric tail somewhat in the manner indicated by Figure 14 of Ness [1965] or Figure 1 of this letter.

Energy flow and closure of current systems in the magnetosphere

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1978
The result of an attempt to express the net energy input to the magnetosphere‐ionosphere system in terms of upstream solar wind parameters is presented. Seven types of electric current system within the magnetosphere are defined and discussed, and it is found that only three of these systematically transfer energy into the magnetosphere from the solar ...

Field-aligned currents in the disturbed magnetosphere and their generator system

Doklady Earth Sciences, 2011
1353 1. In this paper, using new empiric data, three medium scale spatial inhomogeneities have been introduced additionally in each of three fieldaligned currents (FACs) Regions of the Iijima-Potemra (I-P) model. We have constructed the supplemented I-P FACs model, containing nine spatial structures instead of three in its wellknown original version ...

Field-aligned-current systems in the numerically simulated magnetosphere

2000
Configurations of the field-aligned-current (FAC) systems in the magnetosphere-ionosphere (M-I) coupling system are investigated through the analysis of the solutions obtained from a three-dimensional (3-D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation. The results of calculation reproduce the region- 1 and region-2 FAC systems for the southward interplanetary ...

MHD simulations of current systems in planetary magnetospheres: Mercury and Saturn

2000
The study of planetary magnetospheres can provide valuable insight into a wide range of phenomena and processes acting in the terrestrial magnetosphere. This paper uses global MHD simulations to investigate the large scale configuration and current systems in two very different planetary magnetospheres.
