The development of three-dimensional current system during a magnetospheric substorm
Planetary and Space Science, 1974Abstract It is suggested that the pattern of three-dimensional substorm current circuit varies significantly even during the lifetime of a single substorm. This gives rise to quite complex time variations of the magnetic field at low latitude stations even for relatively isolated substorms.

A Model Current System for the Magnetospheric Substorm
1970A model three dimensional current system for the magnetospheric substorm is proposed to account for the distribution of geomagnetic disturbance field vectors on the earth’s surface and for the distribution of auroral electrons and protons at the ionospheric level and in the equatorial plane.

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1965Measurements of the earth's magnetic field in the magnetospheric tail by Explorer 10 [Heppner et al., 1963], Explorer 14 [Cahill, 1964], and particularly by Imp 1 [Ness, 1965] show that the polar field lines are swept back into a magnetospheric tail somewhat in the manner indicated by Figure 14 of Ness [1965] or Figure 1 of this letter.
