A model current system for the magnetospheric substorm

Planetary and Space Science, 1976
Abstract We propose a model three-dimensional current system for the magnetospheric substorm, which can account for the new findings of the field-aligned and ionospheric currents obtained during the last few years by using new techniques. They include (1) the ionospheric currents at the auroral latitude deduced from the Chatanika incoherent scatter ...

DP2 current system in the ionosphere and magnetosphere

Planetary and Space Science, 1981
Abstract Some years ago Nishida (1966) identified an equivalent current system which appeared to reflect a coherent magnetic field fluctuation observed at the equator and at high latitudes. This equivalent current system was subsequently labelled DP2, and since its existence was proposed it has been a topic of some controversy.

Field‐aligned current systems in the magnetospheric ground state

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1998
Using magnetic field or particle data obtained by the Magsat, DMSP‐F6, and DMSP‐F7 satellites, we have investigated characteristics of the magnetospheric plasma environment and field‐aligned currents (FACs) during prolonged geomagnetic quiescence (Kp = 0) associated with extremely low values of the interplanetary magnetic field (|By| ≤ 1.5 nT, −0.5 nT ≤

Magnetospheric current system parameters during the geomagnetic disturbances in May 1998

Известия Российской академии наук. Серия физическая, 2023
Based on the data from the global network of neutron monitors, by using the spectrographic global survey, we obtained the parameters of magnetospheric current systems in the 1998 May events. Within the axisymmetric model for the bounded Earth magnetosphere, we determined the DR (ring current) and DCF (magnetopause currents) parameters for the current ...

Electric Current System in the Undisturbed Magnetospheric Tail

Radio Science, 1971
Satellite measurements of the magnetic field B in the earth's tail indicate the existence of electric currents flowing inside the tail but outside the so‐called ‘Current’ or ‘neutral’ sheet. The Imp 3 data indicate that the density of these currents, although not insignificant, is smaller than the current density inside the ‘neutral’ sheet. Preliminary

The large-scale current system and the ionosphere/magnetosphere coupling

Advances in Space Research, 1997
Abstract The European incoherent scatter radar EISCAT observes at ionospheric altitudes and at all local times, in auroral regions, the signature of the large-scale current system coupling the ionosphere and the magnetosphere. From statistics on EISCAT data, we present here the main features of the current circulation in the ionosphere, and its ...

Non‐MHD influences on the magnetospheric current system

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1994
The dynamics of critical magnetospheric boundary regions is examined through combined particle and fluid simulations. The particle simulations focus on the dynamics of the magnetopause whose structure is shown to be determined by the differential penetration of magnetosheath ions and electrons.

Neutral wind control of the Jovian magnetosphere‐ionosphere current system

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2009
In order to clarify the role of neutral dynamics in the Jovian magnetosphere‐ionosphere‐thermosphere coupling system, we have developed a new numerical model that includes the effect of neutral dynamics on the coupling current. The model calculates axisymmetric thermospheric dynamics and ion composition by considering fundamental physical and chemical ...

Global Current System of Martian Induced Magnetosphere: a Hybrid View

2022
<p>Recent spacecraft observations have revealed the averaged global morphology of the magnetospheric current system of Mars. This current system is generated by the induction of the interplanetary magnetic field and the motional electric field of the solar wind.

Transition current systems in the Earth’s and Saturn’s magnetospheres

Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, 2006
Transition current systems can be generated in the Earth’s magnetosphere at a simultaneous sudden change in the solar wind dynamic pressure and IMF northward turning from an almost horizontal direction. The distribution of the field-aligned currents in the transition current system depending on the IMF components has been calculated.
